Conventional intelligence, scored as intelligence quotient (IQ), is indicative of cognitive reasoning ability. The countless tests and exams we take through school and college are supposed to give a measure of how smart we are. And while they do this to a certain extent, high academic grades are not the sole measure of success.

Of course, a correlation between academic prowess and career success can easily be established in fields of work that require rational thinking; successful doctors, engineers, and scientists typically do have high IQs. But a high IQ alone is no guarantee of success in a career that involves interacting with others, which is the case for nearly every profession in existence.

Emotional intelligence, scored as emotional quotient (EQ), is touted to be a more accurate indicator of whether a person will go on to be a successful working professional. Here we look at why this is the case.

As mentioned earlier, nearly every profession involves human interaction. Of course, a few exceptions can be made: authors and scientists who work in solitude are freed from the need to master the art of interaction. But, for most of us, interacting with others is a daily ritual. Therein lies the importance of emotional intelligence (EI).

EI is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as “the capacity to be aware of, control and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.” Daniel Goleman, a renowned psychologist and the author of several books on EI, explains the five pillars of emotional intelligence and why they correspond to a successful career:

 

Self-awareness

A self-aware person is in control of his or her emotions. Such people can identify shifts in emotion within themselves as well as the triggers, both internal and external, that cause them; criticism from a boss or a personal problem can induce varying emotions which affect our reasoning ability. Persons with high EQs can view such occurrences from a rational standpoint, un-distorted by emotional turmoil, which results in an improved reasoning ability.

Self-regulation

Keeping one's emotions in check is vital at a workplace. Every person has to deal with a multitude of emotions on a regular basis and it's essential that they do not dictate your behaviour. The ability to act logically, while resisting impulsive behaviour, is a highly-valued trait for working professionals.

Motivation

People with a high EQ are self-motivated. They aren't driven by money or job titles though; they weigh the emotional rewards of each action and are fuelled by an inner ambition that is surprisingly resilient to disappointment and failure. Employers have always faced the challenge of motivating their employees and hence, those who don't need to be motivated are highly valuable in the workplace.

 

Empathy

Emotionally intelligent people are not only aware of their emotions, but they can sense those of others as well. They have an uncanny ability to view situations from the other person's perspective. Arguments fuelled by anger are easily resolved by people with high EQs because they understand the other person's issue and can genuinely respond to their concerns.

People skills

Due to their mastery of emotions, emotionally intelligent people get along well with others. They find it easier to build rapport and trust with their colleagues. They also steer clear of office politics — things like backstabbing, bad-mouthing, and undermining others — for which they are quick to gain respect and credibility.

In his book Emotional Intelligence, Goleman demarcates the difference between IQ and EQ in the context of career success:

“IQ can show whether you have the cognitive capacity to handle the information and complexities you face in a particular field. But once you are in that field, emotional intelligence emerges as a much stronger predictor of who will be most successful, because it is how we handle ourselves in our relationships that determines how well we do once we are in a given job.”

His reasoning is certainly accurate; scholastic test scores can only get you into a company, but they cease to matter once you begin working there. Traits like being a team-player and a motivated worker are far more important if you want to succeed in a career. Employers won't hesitate to remove an egocentric and conceited intelligent person from their company. On the other hand, a person who can get along well with everyone is always welcomed in an office.

Serious about landing your dream job this year? Or at least, landing a more fulfilling and higher paying job than the one you’re in now?

If you said, Yes, then let’s do it! My last article in Huffington Post,2017 Highest Paying Jobs, Best Companies and Fastest Growing Industries, has been helping many of you identify the best job role, companies and industries where you to work.

In this article, I’m focusing on where to find your dream job.

As you probably know, it can be daunting navigating through a bazillion career websites, job boards and niche communities touting the latest and greatest job openings. As a leading career coach, I even get overwhelmed! Never-the-less, every year I conduct loads of online research and capture the lessons learned and best practices from my clients to create a list of my favorite (and what, I believe, are some of the most effective and best) career apps and websites to help you find your dream job.

 

Where can you find your dream job?

1. Glassdoor - In my opinion, Glassdoor is the best place to start your job search. It has tons of new jobs added every day, and allows you to search by job title, key responsibilities, company or location. Plus, it provides employee reviews on company culture, senior leaders and salary information to give you a leg up on negotiating your salary. Simply sign up (it’s free!) and you have a bucket load of research and reference materials at your fingertips.Reviews.com said it best, “Glassdoor gives you both the info you need to find job opportunities and the context to see if it’s a good fit for you too.”

2. Indeed - The majority of my clients get hired off of Indeed. This is a Google-like search engine for jobs and one of the most efficient sites for surveying listings, since it aggregates information from job boards, news sites and company listings. An advanced search function provides a few more filters than Glassdoor, and allows you to drill down on a location, keyword and salary range. Indeed says it has 200 million unique visitors month and is available in 60 countries and 28 languages.

3. LinkedIn - Recruiters and hiring managers love this site. A 2015 Recruiter Nation report by Jobvite shows that 87% of recruiters are using LinkedIn (the most popular social media networking site for recruiters) to seek out job candidates. You can post a free profile so that recruiters can check you out. Another key advantage is that LinkedIn allows you to search for jobs and then shows those in your network who are currently working, or have worked, inside that organization. This makes it easier for you to find (and hopefully get) referrals which is the #1 way job candidates land a job!

Search job openings on LinkedIn by going to your home page and clicking the “jobs” tab towards the top of the page. You can search by job title, keyword, company, or use the advanced search to include additional criteria. Be sure to scroll down to view job openings and companies hiring, as well as those in your network who have worked inside those organizations. Niche job sites...

SmartRecruiters.com reports that 62-percent of jobs are posted on niche job boards. Do yourself a favor and invest some time researching theirBest 50 Niche Job Boards list. Be sure to bookmark those sites with jobs that most closely align to your skills, passions and career goals.

For example,The Ladders features executive and management jobs that pay $80,000 and above salaries. This site also has a nifty Resume Reviewer which can analyze your resume for key words, grammar and any missing information.

If you want to land a job in STEM (science, technology, engineering or math), then bookmark Dice. If you want to find jobs in journalism, P.R. or social media then try Media Bistro. If you’d like to work for a non-profit organization in the U.S. then bookmark Idealist. Or, if you’re a student or young professional, check outInternships for global organizations with paid internships.

 

Freelance gigs...

  • Want to earn some extra cash or have more freedom and flexibility in your career? You can become a freelancer or consultant by posting your skills and experience on these sites and then sit back and let the jobs come to you!
  • Accenture has been on Fortune’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list for the past 8 consecutive years as a Fortune Global 500 company that provides strategy, consulting, digital, technology and operations services. Check out Accenture Consulting and Forbes review Accenture’s Management Consulting Division.
  • Freelancer has posted almost 11 million freelancing jobs to date worth $3+ billion in 600 categories including website development, mobile apps, software architecture, internet marketing, and more.
  • UpWork says it posts 3 million part-time, short-term and freelance gigs annually worth $1 billion. For designers, creatives, programmers, developers, and a variety of other business services skills.
  • OnForce specializes in IT, OEM & POS support, as well as consume electronic installation and repairs.

Other sites that can put some cash in your pocket include: Uber, SnagaJob, TaskRabbit, and Postmates. These sites offer marketplaces for anyone wanting to get hired as a driver, mover, courier, cleaner and basic chore-doer.

Tip - the career apps and websites listed above are great resources to help you find your next job. I recommend creating a job search agent on those sites you like so that you’ll spend less time searching and more time receiving instant notifications of jobs that interest you.

In future articles, I’ll share my favorite resources and tips to help you land your dream job by getting more job leads, referrals and recommendations, as well as how to create a stellar resume and how to nail your job interviews. There’s a big difference between being busy and being effective.

For most of my early entrepreneurial journey I often found myself spending hours at my computer only to look at the clock mid-afternoon to realize I hadn’t really accomplished anything.

It turns out this is a common thing for entrepreneurs—entrepreneurs work63% longer than the average employee, working an average of 52 hours a week.

If you feel like you are always working but not advancing in your career one successful entrepreneur has a solution. He says there’s three skills he mastered to build his business to 7-figures in annual revenue in just two years. If you can master these skills, you’ll be able to put an end to “busyness” and advance your career in a fraction of the time.

 

Meet John Lee Dumas, founder of the daily business podcast for entrepreneurs “Entrepreneur on Fire,” which gets 1.2 Million monthly listens and generates 7-figures in yearly revenue. Entrepreneur on Fire has featured distinguished guests like Tony Robbins, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Tim Ferris, and was awarded ‘Best of iTunes.’

This week on Unconventional Life, Dumas shares the three skills every entrepreneur needs to master to advance their careers in 2017.

Dumas says he can relate to feeling challenged in the early days of his entrepreneurial journey. When he first launched Entrepreneur on Fire, he had no experience with podcasting and had been told by his mentors it was a bad idea.

Though the odds were stacked against him, he saw a need for daily content for entrepreneurs and wanted to fulfill that need. “I wanted more content, fresh content every single day waiting for me and I didn’t understand why it didn’t exist so I decided to be the change I wanted to see in the world,” says Dumas.

Roughly four years later, Entrepreneur on Fire has become one of the most listened to and valued podcasts by entrepreneurs. Dumas has released over 1,500 episodes, which collectively have over 43 Million listens.

Dumas accredits his success to three key skills—productivity, discipline, and focus. He says these skills are the horsepower behind execution and separate those who follow through from those who don’t.

In mastering these skills, you can be sure you’ll be able to conquer anything in your path. Below, Dumas shares his tips to master productivity, discipline and focus.

 

1. Operate In Your Genius

Being productive is effortless when you enjoy what you do and you’re good at it. Dumas calls this your “zone of genius.” You can uncover your zone of genius with a simple 5-day exercise. Draw a line down the center of a blank piece of paper and label the left side, “things I enjoy,” and the right side, “things I’m good at.” For ten minutes each day, write down as much as you can on each side. Repeat the exercise for five days in a row.

2. Own Your Strengths

“We have way more weaknesses than we have strengths,” Dumas says. “The problem is people spend their time on all those weaknesses trying to be ok at something they’re crappy at. Nobody wants ok, you might as well stay crappy.” Forget your weaknesses; identify what your natural strengths are and work on developing them to a level of mastery. You’ll work your “discipline” and “focus” muscles in the process.

3. Outsource

You can free up a tremendous amount of time and energy with outsourcing. Check yourself by calculating your “hourly wage,” or the amount of money you make divided by the hours you work. If your hourly wage isn’t what you want it to be, consider hiring someone to do simple things like website maintenance or responding to emails that aren’t an effective use of your time.

4. Put The Blinders On

Those who try to do too many things at once rarely get anything done. Select one project you want to see to completion and make it the sole object of your focus until it is complete. Eliminate distractors and execute your project with laser-like focus for maximum productivity.

5. Plan

Your goals can feel overwhelming and unattainable when you don’t have a concrete plan of action to achieve them. Determine what your goals are and create a realistic plan with daily action steps that will take you to your goal. In creating your plan, make sure your roadmap is guaranteed to work. You don’t want to waste your energy doing things that don’t produce results. Your plan should give you confidence and peace of mind that every single day you are making progress and are certain to arrive at your goal.

6. Stick To A Routine

Routines are a great way to establish structure and hold yourself accountable to your best work. Dumas says he starts every day with running, meditation, and journaling to put himself in the frame of mind he needs to be successful. Maybe your daily routine involves coffee and rejuvenating breaks. Selecting a career path can be a daunting process for everyone. For those who don’t know their interests and their strengths, it can be even more troubling. Unfortunately, most people spend majority of their time planning vacation and which clothes to wear rather than trying to figure out which career path they want to take. But there are some people who are totally unaware of how to search for a suitable career path and the process can feel like going nowhere.

 

If you ever faced such problems while selecting a career path, here are some questions you need to ask yourself, answers of which can make a huge impact on your future.

 

1. Am I clear on my path ahead?

 

This is the first question you need to ask yourself. Most career decisions get wrong because we are not clear on what we want few years ahead on the road. We make decisions based on temporary knowledge. It’s time we start focusing on long term visions. You are going to spend more than 30 years working so make sure you are clear on your path ahead. Does the future in your selected field look promising? Will you be happy pursuing it for entire life?

 

 

 

 

 

2. What value do I want to provide people?

 

Of all the concerns people have for selecting their career, very few people focus on the value they want to bring to this world. The appreciation and progress of your work will 100 percent depend on the value you bring to the table. In case of job, it means value to your organization and in business; it means value to your customers.

 

Think of last time when you provided a huge amount to someone. It will be definitely because of the amount of value they provide to you that you are willing to pay them this huge amount. Think of how you will help maximum number of people through your work.

 

3. How do I want to be remembered?

 

We all remember Steve Jobs and Mahatma Gandhi for their work, but how do you want to be remembered? Will people think of you when they use your product or service? Will people miss you when you leave that place? Will you be indispensable in your work ethic? It all matters for a long and successful career. Keep this in mind when you select any career for short term success.

 

4. Am I ready to bear the pain of discipline?

 

It’s not enough to only select a career. There is a famous saying:

“What got you here won’t get you there.”

 

This is absolutely true when it comes to career. Often people achieve one milestone and they think they are genius and then they stop working like before, but the truth is, it requires even more amount of sincere effort and dedication to get ahead than before. And it also takes tremendous amount of discipline to work and may be take few years to achieve what you want. Are you ready to bear the pain of discipline to achieve what you want?

 

 

 

 

 

5. Who will cry when I die?

 

The correct way to look at a career is this:

”When you select a career, it not only affects you but many people who depend on your work.”

 

And you are going decades in your field. Do you want that work to be called mediocre or okay or do you want to call it a masterpiece? Ask who will benefit the most from your work and how can you provide mind blowing service which they can’t even imagine in their dreams. That is how you select a career.

 

There is no correct way to select a career, but a career based on your true values with a mission to helping mankind can be the most rewarding, and history has only been made by those who see their work in that way.
