For years, one of the biggest downsides to owning an Android device was how long it took software updates to arrive. Another was how quickly those updates dried up. Google has been working hard with Android OEMs, chipmakers, and wireless carriers to improve the situation, though, and a recently-unveiled project could make a huge difference.

The way things are right now, getting an Android update to your phone isn't nearly as simple as Google tweaking some code and sending it your way. The companies making the processors that power the devices need to perform tests to make sure everything still works the way it's supposed to. Manufacturers need to check for interference with their numerous customizations and pre-installed apps. Last but not least, wireless carriers have test their apps and ensure that connectivity isn't adversely affected.

There's a considerable amount of effort involved and Google's official announcement notes that the current process is "incredibly time consuming and costly." To ease the burden, Google will introduce a major change in Android O it's calling Project Treble.

With Project Treble, the core Android operating system will be fully separated from any of the vendor modifications  that companies like Samsung and AT&T need to make. Those companies will simply be able to re-apply their code to any Android updates Google sends along. That should lead to updates arriving on your device much more quickly, which is a very good thing. Running a fully-patched device is, after all, one of the best ways to avoid a nasty malware infection.

That's one major problem with Android updates tackled, but what the lack of longevity? Project Treble may help there, too. If it's easier for vendors to sign off on updates it's stands to reason that they'll be willing to keep doing it for longer stretches. Catching up to iOS (Apple has provided updates for as long as 5 years) might not be realistic, but most Android users are lucky to receive updates for two years. Any improvement on that would be welcome.

It all sounds very promising, but there is one major downside to Project Treble. While any future devices that launch with Android O will reap the benefits, most current-gen Android phones and tablets won't. So far, only the Pixel and Pixel XL are sure things.

Have you ever thought of yourself as a problem solver? I’m guessing not. But in reality we are constantly solving problems. And the better we are at it, the easier our lives are.

Problems arise in many shapes and forms. They can be mundane, everyday problems, or larger more complex problems:

  • What to have for dinner tonight?
  • Which route to take to work?
  • How to fix a project that’s running behind schedule?
  • How to change from an uninspiring job to a career you’re really passionate about?

Every day you’ll be faced with at least one problem to solve. But it gets easier when you realise that problems are simply choices. There’s nothing ‘scary’ about them other than having to make a decision.

No matter what job you’re in, where you live, who your partner is, how many friends you have; you will be judged on your ability to solve problems. Because problems equal hassles for everyone concerned. And people don’t like hassle. So the more problems you can solve, the less hassle all-round, the happier people are with you. Everyone wins.

Problem solving skills are for our everyday lives.

Problem is something hard to understand or accomplish or deal with. It can be a task, a situation, or even a person. Problem solving involves methods and skills to find the best solutions to problems.

Problem solving is important because we all have decisions to make, questions to answer in our lives. Amazing people like Eleanor Roosevelt, Steve Jobs, Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., are all great problems solvers. Good parents, teachers, doctors and waiters, they all have to be good at solving different sort of problems as well.

So what can you do to enhance your problem solving skills?

You don’t have to be super smart to be a problem solver, you just need practice.

Most people believe that you have to be very intelligent in order to be a good problem solver, but that’s not true. When you understand the different steps to solve a problem, you’ll be able to come up with great solutions.

1. Focus on the solution – not the problem

Neuroscientists have proven that your brain cannot find solutions if you focus on the problem.[1] This is because when you focus on the problem you’re effectively feeding ‘negativity’ which in turn activates negative emotions in the brain. These emotions block potential solutions.

I’m not saying you should ‘ignore the problem’ – instead try and remain calm. It helps to first acknowledge the problem and then move your focus to a solution-oriented mindset where you keep fixed on what the ‘answer’ could be instead of lingering on ‘what went wrong’ and ‘who’s fault it is’.

2. Adapt 5 Whys to clearly define the problem

By repeatedly asking the question “why” on a problem, you can dig into the root cause of a problem, and that’s how you can find the best solution to tackle the root problem once and for all. (And it can go deeper than just asking why for five times.) For example:

Problem: Always late to work

  • Why am I late to work?
I always click the snooze button and just want to go on sleeping.
  • Why do I want to go on sleeping?
I feel so tired in the morning.
  • Why do I feel tired in the morning?
I slept late the night before, that’s why.
  • Why did I sleep late?
I wasn’t sleepy after drinking coffee, and I just kept scrolling my Facebook feed and somehow I couldn’t stop.
  • Why did I drink coffee?
Because I was too sleepy at work in the afternoon, not having enough sleep the night before.

So there you see, if you didn’t try to dig out the root of the problem, you may just set a few more alarms and have it beep every five minutes in the morning. But in fact, the problem you need to solve is to quit Facebook surfing endlessly at night so you’ll feel more energetic in the day time, and you won’t need coffee.

3. Simplify things

As human beings, we have a tendency to make things more complicated than they need to be! Try simplifying your problem by generalizing it.

Remove all the details and go back to the basics. Try looking for a really easy, obvious solution – you might be surprised at the results! And we all know that it’s often the simple things that are the most productive.[2]

4. List out as many solutions as possible

Try and entertain ‘ALL POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS’ – even if they seem ridiculous at first. It’s important you keep an open mind to boost creative thinking, which can trigger potential solutions. Coming from 10 years in the corporate advertising industry it is drummed into you that ‘No idea is a bad idea’ and this aids creative thinking in brainstorms and other problem-solving techniques. Whatever you do – do not ridicule yourself for coming up with ‘stupid solutions’ as it’s often the crazy ideas that trigger other more viable solutions.

5. Think laterally

Change the ‘direction’ of your thoughts by thinking laterally.[3] Pay attention to the saying, ‘You cannot dig a hole in a different place by digging it deeper”. Try to change your approach and look at things in a new way. You can try flipping your objective around and looking for a solution that is the polar opposite!

Even if it feels silly, a fresh & unique approach usually stimulates a fresh solution.

6. Use language that creates possibility

Lead your thinking with phrases like ‘what if…’ and ‘imagine if…’ These terms open up our brains to think creatively and encourage solutions.

Avoid closed, negative language such as ‘I don’t think…’ or ‘This is not right but…’.

There’s nothing scary about a problem when you start to adapt my advice.

Try not to view problems as ‘scary’ things! If you think about it what is a problem? It’s really just feedback on your current situation.

All a problem is telling you is that something is not currently working and that you need to find a new way around it.

So try and approach problems neutrally – without any judgment. Practice focusing on defining a problem, keep calm and not to make things too complicated.

Sticking to your guns is often seen as a good thing, but sometimes it can do more harm than good. Especially when it means persisting with a mundane process in full knowledge that it will cause new problems…

In short: today Apple AAPL -0.70% stopped signing iOS 10.1 and iOS 10.1.1. What this means is Apple servers will not recognise either update as legitimate anymore so iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users can no longer downgrade to them from iOS 10.2, which Apple released last week. Apple typically stops signing old versions of iOS within a week or two of launching a new version.

And yet persisting with this seemingly simple housekeeping exercise makes no sense whatsoever given the problems iOS 10.2 is exacerbating with the so-called ‘30% battery bug’.

Apple iOS 10.2. Image credit: Gordon Kelly

Apple iOS 10.2. Image credit: Gordon Kelly

First reported by me last month, the 30% bug can affect every iOS 10 compatible iPhone with the exception of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus and it causes the phone to die suddenly when the battery is around the 30% mark. To date Apple has acknowledged the problem initially with a small batch of iPhone 6S models (a batch size it then increased), but says it has found no evidence of this happening to any other model.

This stance has been maintained despite a 62 page long thread in Apple’s official Support Communities forum, frustrated tweets from iPhone 6S Plus owner Tony ‘Father of the iPod’ Fadell and a stern warning from the Chinese Government which argues the numerous reports it has received of the problem across multiple models mean Apple is failing to “meet basic consumer needs for normal wireless communication.”

The Big Signing Problem

So where does the issue arrive from Apple’s decision to stop signing iOS 10.1 and iOS 10.1.1, especially since many peg these updates are responsible for the 30% bug’s creation in the first place? It’s quite simple: it is because iOS 10.2 is consistently reported as making the problem even worse.

“Same here, iOS 10.2 actually made the problem worse,” says Apple Support Communities poster ricardo jb in response this growing theme on thread. “The battery percentage seems to get stuck at some level for a while, even with battery draining apps such as pokemon go running, then it drops different percentages at different moments, it's really random.”

Since I first pointed this out I have also been contacted numerous times over email and social media by users empathising with this situation:

Complaints on Twitter mirror the same frustration expressed by users on Apple Support Communities. Image credit: Twitter

Furthermore iOS 10.2 is actually introducing the 30% bug to previously unaffected iPhones which is why some had found downgrading to iOS 10.1.1 or iOS 10.1 to be a good temporary fix. Forum poster IHIP699 spells out this situation and perfectly sums up the subsequent frustration at Apple’s decision to prematurely stop signing these releases:

iOS 10.1 and iOS 10.1.1 were seen as a safe haven for many troubled iOS 10.2 users - but not anymore. Image credit: Apple

Hope On The Horizon?

So with Apple’s bizarre decision to maroon users on iOS 10.2 should we all be picking up our lanterns and pitchforks and descending on Apple HQ? Not yet. Because there are two pieces of potentially good news.

Firstly, while holding out on admitting to the wider battery problem, Apple did introduce a battery diagnostics tool in iOS 10.2 which it declined to list in the release notes. Apple also declined to tell me how the tool works, what it collects or where the data is sent but it is at least an attempt by the company to try and investigate what is going on.

Further to this we have iOS 10.2.1 which Apple currently has in beta testing right now. Again Apple has declined to list any features of iOS 10.2.1 to beta testers, but some have noticed significant improvements to the 30% bug while trying it:

Some Apple Support Communities users have seen improvements with iOS 10.2.1. Image credit: Apple

Some Apple Support Communities users have seen improvements with iOS 10.2.1. Image credit: Apple

Yes, that’s not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it offers hope - especially with more iOS 10.2.1 betas likely to come before release. It is also worth pointing out that (as large, powerful and self confident as Apple is) the growing pressure from users coupled with the frustration of a vocal Chinese government surely must mean the company is moving quickly behind the scenes.

I know cynics will call this hokey optimism, but I think the combination of the diagnostics tool and early iOS 10.2.1 reports gives us enough reason to be hopeful. Even if Apple, in stubbornly sticking to process and cutting off the downgrade path from iOS 10.2, has affected users banging their heads against the wall right now…

iOS 10 problems continue to plague iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users as we head into 2017. If you’ve run into an iOS 10 problem on your device try a fix from this list before taking your device down to the local Apple Store.

The iOS 10 beta killed off some nasty bugs but iOS 10 problems slipped through the cracks. To combat these issues, Apple’s released several bug fix updates including iOS 10.1 (a major update) and the iOS 10.1.1 update (a minor bug fixer).

The software is improved from where it was in September but iOS 10 problems continue to linger on the latest version of the operating system.

How to send handwritten messages in iOS 10.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise. iOS updates, even updates that go through Apple’s extensive beta process, are always riddled with problems. Problems with services, apps and performance are extremely common.

iOS 10.1.1 owners are reporting these problems and a host of others and today we want to help them (and you) solve your issue.

We don’t know when Apple will release its next iOS 10 update. So, if you’re dealing with a problem on iOS 10, iOS 10.0.1, iOS 10.0.2, iOS 10.0.3, iOS 10.1, or iOS 10.1.1 you’re on your own until Apple pushes out whatever is next. (An iOS 10.2 update is confirmed and will likely arrive in December.)

This list of common iOS 10 problems comes with fixes that have been passed down over the years. All of them are proven fixes. Dig into these before you take your device down to the local Apple Store.

How to Fix iOS 10 Installation Problems

The most common installation issue is one where the download/installation process gets stuck/frozen. A number of prospective iOS 10 users already encountered this problem and we expect the issue to be a problem throughout the iOS 10 update’s lifespan.

Fortunately, there’s a very simple fix that should jumpstart the installation process on your iPhone, iPad and/or iPod touch.

iOS-10-brick

If your iOS 10 download gets stuck, hold down the home button and the power button (volume down and power button on the iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus) at the same time to perform a reset. Your device should power down automatically within 10 seconds.

It will then turn itself back on and you should be able to get through the iOS 10 download/installation process.

How to Fix iOS 10 Bluetooth Problems

Bluetooth problems are among the most common iOS issues and we’ve already seen a ton of complaints about iOS 10 Bluetooth issues in the early going.

iOS 10.1.1 users are reporting broken Bluetooth connections with speakers, headsets, and Bluetooth audio in the car. These problems can be a bit tricky to fix but we do have some remedies that should dislodge the issue(s), at least temporarily.

First, try forgetting your Bluetooth connection. To forget a Bluetooth connection on your device go to Settings > Bluetooth > Select your connection using the circular blue i tab > Tap Forget this Device. After this is complete, try reconnecting.

If you still can’t connect, it’s time to take more drastic measures. First, try resetting your device’s network settings. To do that, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. It will take a few seconds to complete and your device will forget known Bluetooth devices. Reconnect and try again.

JBL Charge 3 Review - Waterproof Bluetooth speaker - 6

If it’s still busted, reset all of your settings. This has worked for us and others in the past and it’s worth a shot if nothing is working.

To do this go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. The will take a few minutes to complete and after it’s done your device’s settings will be restored to factory defaults. Make sure you have Wi-Fi passwords handy because your device will forget them.

If these steps fail you, consult the manual for your Bluetooth device, and if you need to, the manual for your car.

If you’re having issues with Bluetooth in your car and you can’t find a manual fix, you might need to bring it into a dealer/specialist to see if they can diagnose the problem. You might need to do more than forget Bluetooth networks.

How to Fix iOS 10 Battery Life Problems

Surprise, surprise. Some iOS 10 owners are running into battery life problems after installing the latest update. Battery life problems are among the most common iOS problems and they will plague iOS 10 users for months to come.

If you’re seeing iOS 10 battery life issues and you just downloaded iOS 10, wait a few days before doing anything major. It sometimes takes a couple of days for new updates to settle in.

Moshi-iGlaze-Ion-Review-iPhone-6s-Battery-Case-2

If for some reason you notice abnormal battery drain on your iPhone or iPad after two days or so, it’s time to take action.

We’ve put together a list of fixes for common iOS 10 battery life problems. These fixes have worked for us and many others and they’re worth a look if you want to fix the problem from your computer chair rather than at an Apple Store.

If you’re dealing with a busted iPhone 6s battery, you might be able to get a replacement from Apple. To determine if you’re eligible for a replacement, check Apple’s guide to see if you’re eligible.

How to Fix iOS 10 Wi-Fi Problems

iOS 10 users are running into an assortment of problems with Wi-Fi. Here’s how you can try and fix broken Wi-Fi on iOS 10.

Before you start fiddling with iOS 10 and your settings, we recommend looking into your router/modem situation.

If you suddenly run into problems on a known network, try unplugging the router for a solid minute before plugging it back in.

You might also check to see if there is a firmware update though many routers will install updates automatically. Each router is different so you’ll need to consult your manual on how to do this.

If you can’t access the router or you’re positive it has nothing to do with it, it’s time to dig into iOS 10 on your device.

Verizon-WiFi-Calling-iOS-9.31

If you run into Wi-Fi problems on iOS 10 you’ll first want to forget the network causing you problems and try reconnecting to it. Go into your Settings > Wi-Fi > Select your connection > Tap Forget this Network at the top of the screen. Reconnect if you can and check speeds.

If this fails, it’s time to reset your network settings. To do this, head into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

It should only take a few seconds to complete though you’ll lose your known passwords. Make sure you have your Wi-Fi passwords handy before you do this.

If none of these fixes work for you, you can head here for some other potential fixes. Apple’s also got its own guide to Wi-Fi problems available so make sure to look there too.

How to Fix Touch ID Problems

If your Touch ID starts acting up after installing the iOS 10 update, don’t panic. Touch ID issues are extremely common and there are potential fixes for fingerprints not reading and issues with Touch ID in the App Store.

If your Touch ID suddenly stops working with iOS 10, the first thing to do is re-train your fingerprints. Make sure dirt and sweat are removed from the Touch ID sensor and that oil is removed from your hands. You want a nice clean print.

After that’s done go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Enter your Passcode. On the next screen swipe from right to left on each fingerprint to delete them. When this is complete you can tap on Add a Fingerprint… to re-train your Touch ID.

iPhone-6s-Plus-Touch-ID

If your iOS 10 Touch ID problems pertain to the App Store, here’s a possible fix. First go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Enter your Passcode.

After that, turn off iTunes & App Store. Reboot your iPhone or iPad. Go back to Touch ID & Passcode in Settings and turn iTunes & App Store back on. This has fixed Touch ID issues for us, and others in the past.

If Touch ID stops working altogether, you can try resetting the phone by holding down the home button and the power button (volume down and power button on an iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus) for 10 seconds or until the phone restarts.

If that quick fix fails, you might want to try a factory reset. The instructions can be found at the bottom of this page. It’s a long process but its a known fix for major Touch ID problems.

How to Fix iOS 10 Data Problems

iOS 10 users are already complaining about cellular data problems and we expect complaints to pick up (as they always do) in the weeks ahead.

These, like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues, can be difficult to nail down and fix but there are a few remedies to try if you start experiencing trouble.

First, you’ll want to make sure your service provider isn’t experiencing an outage. Outages are common and you’ll want to check social media and your carrier’s website for details.

If you’re positive it’s not an outage, try restarting your device. Power it down and then power it back on to see if that helps.

iOS-10-vs-iOS-9-Walkthrough-7

If it doesn’t flip on Airplane Mode for 30 seconds before turning it off. Airplane Mode kills all connections on your device and this quick fix has settled cellular data issues for some users in the past.

We also recommend toggling off Cellular Data and/or LTE to see if that helps alleviate your problem. To shut LTE down temporarily, go into Settings > Cellular > Enable LTE > Off. Turn it back on when/if you need it.

To shut off Cellular Data completely without turning off any other services go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > Toggle Off. Toggle it back on a 30 seconds later to see if things have improved.

How to Fix iOS 10 Touchscreen Problems

If your device’s screen stops responding with iOS 10 on board, you don’t need to head to an Apple Store. Yet.

Touchscreen issues are common and they can pop up at any time. If you start experiencing issues with iOS 10 and your device, take these steps.

If your iPhone/iPad’s screen stops responding to touches and swipes, you’ll want to hold down the power button and home button (volume down and power button on an iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus) at the same time. Your phone will reboot in a few seconds and the problems should be gone.

If it doesn’t work the first time, try it again until it works. In the past, its taken three hard reboots for touchscreen lag issues to disappear on our devices.

How to Fix iOS 10 App Problems

iOS 10 and some apps aren’t getting along. In some cases, developers are telling iPhone and iPad users to avoid the update completely until fixes can be found. Others have already rolled out support updates for Apple’s new software.

If you’re running into a problem with a third-party application, you’ll want to check to see if there is an iOS 10 support update lurking on the App Store. There’s a good chance the developer’s issued an update that comes with iOS 10 features and fixes. Just make sure you read reviews from iOS 10 users before you install.

If you’re on the latest version and you’re running into issues you can’t fix, try reinstalling the application. Make sure all of your data is backed up before you do this.

If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to contact the developer and report the issue so that it can fix the problem in a future update.

iOS-10-music

If your problem is with an app download from the App Store, try restarting your device. If you’re connected to the internet and your app isn’t downloading, hold down the power button and home button (volume down and power button on an iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus) and restart your phone or tablet.

If the download is still stuck, rapidly tap “Update” on an app before the “Open” symbol appears. It might take 10 times or more for the download to get unstuck so you’ll need to be patient.

How to Improve iOS 10 Performance

If you are dealing with iOS 10 performance issues like lag, you’ll want to consult our list of tips to improve the fluidity of iOS.

These can be difficult to fix, particularly on older devices like the iPhone 5, and you might just have to bite the bullet and perform a factory reset.

How to Fix iOS 10 Messages Problems

The iOS 10 update brings new features to the Messages app though many of the iOS 10 Messages problems we’re seeing are old and extremely common.

If Messages starts acting up in any way, we recommend shutting it off for a minute and turning it back on. Go into Settings > Messages > Toggle iMessage off then back on.

If you’re still having issues sending or receiving messages, restart your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to see if that helps.

If it doesn’t, head into your settings and reset Network Settings. Head into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Have your Wi-Fi passwords handy because this will cause your device to forget them.

How to Fix iOS 10 Problems If Nothing Else Works

If your iOS 10 problem isn’t listed here or these fixes don’t help, there are a few other solutions we recommend.

If you want to continue to try and diagnose the problem from your chair, head to Apple’s discussion forums and ask for help. Just make sure you do it in the right place. If you’re unable to find a fix there, it’s time to take a more drastic approach.

ios-10-beta-downgrade-instructions

You can try downgrading to a previous version of iOS to see if that improves performance. There’s no guarantee that it will but there’s also no guarantee that it won’t.

If you’re fed up and still don’t want to move from your chair, you can do a factory reset or restore from a backup.

A factory reset will wipe everything on your phone or tablet and return it back to the way it was when you first bought the device so you’ll need to make sure anything and everything you care about (photos, videos, etc) is backed up properly.

To perform a full on factory reset on iPhone or iPad go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Again, this should only be used as a last resort.

iPhone-7-release-prep-Apple-Store-Trade-in-

If you’re fine with leaving the house, we recommend taking your device into your local Apple Store. Schedule an appointment at the Genius Bar and see if the geniuses there can diagnose your iOS 10 problem.

If you’d rather get in touch with Apple online, ping Apple Support via its Twitter account.

Install iOS 10.1.1 If You Want Better Security

If you failed to make the move to iOS 10.1 before the iOS 10.1.1 release and you value your security, you'll want to seriously consider the iOS 10.1.1 update. If you failed to download iOS 10.1 know that iOS 10.1.1 brings iOS 10.1's 12 security patches along with it. These patches enhance the security on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch making them ideal for those of you who store sensitive files/data on your device. Most people do.Apple's iOS 10.1.1 update comes with those patches and it also brings the patches from Apple's previous versions of iOS 10. If you haven't downloaded iOS 10 yet, you'll get all of those baked in. This is important, particularly for those of you on something older than iOS 9.3.5. If you failed to install Apple's iOS 9.3.5 update, iOS 10.1.1 will also bring the three crucial security patches it delivered earlier this year. These patch up serious security problems that could potentially expose your calls, contacts, texts, and emails. If security is important to you, iOS 10.1.1 is probably worth a download right now.

Gerhard Gschwantner, an author from Salzburg (Austria) said, “Problems are nothing but a wake-up call for creativity.” This is true in many ways. Unless one takes creative measures towards problem-solving, sticking to old ways is not going to help. Employee monitoring has become a recent and fast spreading trend in the business world.

An increasing number of companies are engaging in employee monitoring via xnspy android spying to track their performance. The practice also helps them avoid legal liabilities, protects the company’s trade secrets, and addresses other security concerns. In the end, this practice also has a positive impact on customer satisfaction.

Despite technological advances, companies cannot solve problems outside the walls of their office. According to the report on Techland.time.com titled Who’s Winning, iOS or Android? All the Numbers, All in One Place, androids have always taken the lead in the mobile market. This explains why company issued cell phones are mostly Android smartphones. They are easy to use and offer employers the benefit of finding compatible tracking apps much easily as opposed to iOS devices. Here is how using mobile software technology can help companies solve 5 major problems that they face.

1. Android spying enables tracking employees.

A large number of companies rely on the mobile workforce. It may be part of the employee’s duties to be on the go because of sales, marketing, or delivering products to customers. However, one of the greatest dilemmas they face is being sure that they are where they say they are. Using GPS tracking is the best solution for this and with apps such as GPS Tracker and XnSPy, it has become very easy. All employers have to do is install the app on the company issued cell phone.

2. Listening to calls that employees make.

Employers often worry about employees leaking or trading company secrets with competitors. There have been incidences in the past that led to serious losses to companies when employees committed espionage. However, with monitoring apps, employers can find peace of mind. They can listen to recorded calls employees make using the company-issued cell phones to screen what information they share.

Such apps also provide details like the exact time and duration of each call. Moreover, if an employer watch-lists a particular contact, the app alerts him/her whenever the watch-listed caller engages in calls with the target employee.

3. Tracking cell phone usage and idle time.

One of the greatest reasons for poor productivity and declining efficiency at a workplace is a lack of time management. Often, employees spend too much time on using their cell phone to surf the internet, play games, or watch movies stored on the smartphone. Companies experience avoidable mistakes due to distractions and suffer financial losses too.

To prevent this, modern spying apps come with the ability to track cell phone usage. They track the browser history, bookmarked pages, and they show the user, the frequency of visits by the target employee.

4. Access incoming and outgoing emails by employees.

Businesses rely on email correspondences. Gmail has proven to be one of the most reliable email clients that also allow business management. Managing teams and project using emails has become a very important business practice in recent times. However, sometimes, employees tend to abuse this privilege and use emails to send sensitive documents and company trade secrets.

By monitoring incoming and outgoing emails, employers can protect their business. Most apps for android spying offer email monitoring as one of the features.

5. Remote control of device.

Because cell phones play a very important role in our lives today, everyone and everything depends on them. It is inevitable that employees store sensitive information on the company-issued cell phone. But, in incidences where one loses the cell phone or theft, there may be a risk of leaking classified information. Some information stored on the cell phone like photos, videos, recorded messages, or documents, may damage the reputation of the company. In such cases, the monitoring app installed on the cell phone allows the employer to remotely lock the device, track its location, and even wipe off all data in extreme cases.

Have you ever wondered how long you stared or tapped away at the screen on your phone? How about the amount of time spent on the Internet? According to calculated data and social scientist research, this could prove to have many negative effects on your health. For the past eight years, we have experienced the rise of the smartphones. No longer do we have to sit down and glance at a screen from our home or desk; now we always carry one with us. Also, the overall style of the Internet has evolved over the past 40 years from lines of code to written words, and finally, to highly stylized Internet with various graphics, emojis, and videos. Technology, as it stands today, serves the people and has a number of benefits but can also disconnect you from reality and damage your human-like qualities such as senses and emotions.

Intrusions Upon the Real World

Technology overload seems to be affecting not just a single demographic but anyone who has multiple devices. While having these devices has caused people to become high-level multi-taskers, it has left many without any time to themselves. At one point, work was something you go to, but now smartphones have made work much more; you carry it around wherever you go. While technology overload isn’t a medically recognized disorder, it can easily be seen thanks to research into the habits of people and organizations that have used or over relied on technology.

In an article titled “Does the Internet Increase Anxiety?” freelance writer Ned Smith, who is also a former senior writer at international consulting firm Sweeney Vesty and vice president of communications for iQuest Analytics, stated, “The promise of the digital age has been that constant connectedness will increase productivity and effectiveness, but the opposite has turned out to be true. The constant onslaught of information from smartphones, computers, and other digital devices has actually decreased productivity, creativity, and the quality of personal relationships. Information overload and the multitasking required by today’s digital demands make people feel like there is too much to do and that life is spinning out of control.”

While the quality of relationships, time and productivity on a personal level is important, companies are losing out financially as well. Within the same article, Smith stated, “Basex, a research firm that specializes in technical issues in the workplace, reckons that information overload is responsible for economic losses of $900 billion a year at work.”

How to Set Boundaries

One of the first steps to limit your technology usage is to set boundaries. You may wonder how to accomplish these steps. Many social scientists, researchers, and advocates of limiting technology have opinions and real data on what methods to take to help alleviate these symptoms.

1. Do things in a sequential order

Dr. Joanne Cantor, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison stated within the same article that you should limit your multi-tasking and focus more on single tasking. “Do one thing at a time,” she said. “You’ll find you actually save time.” Focusing on single-tasking instead and committing to longer goals can help you be more productive.

2. Be the master of your own interruptions

Learning how not to respond is easier said than done especially when it has become instantaneous. Besides single tasking, checking your phone every hour can devolve into every minute. The idea is to not be on available 24/7 for every single thing. While some calls, emails and texts will be more urgent than others, you should set aside blocks of time every so often to check emails and text messages.

3. Take the time to recharge

Technology also makes work better but at the same time longer than before and can even cause you to work outside of the office. “Research shows that information overload interferes with your ability to think outside the box,” Cantor said. Work is good, but leisure is needed to get the most out of work. Channel energy into other hobbies such as fitness, cooking, drawing or playing musical instruments. These activities focus more on single sequential tasks instead of juggling multiple things at a time.

Since the groundbreaking creation of the Internet, there has been a constant innovation that we have benefited from. Making our lives easier, faster and safer than ever before, something like technology is a double-edged sword. Normal usage of the multiple devices around us can push people further into addiction-like qualities, causing an overload of information around us. Smartphones and computers can work tirelessly while humans cannot; that is why it is important that researchers tell you to recharge yourself by stepping away from the deluge of information once in a while.

What strikes the minds of ordinary people who want to start a business in Nepal? A clothing store? A beauty parlour? A restaurant? Or a lounge bar? The techno-savvy ones, on the other hand, would probably think of starting an e-commerce company or may be a social networking site.

In other words, many aspiring entrepreneurs only think of copying someone else’s ideas, tweaking them a bit and rolling out the products as their own.

Well, this may work, but only in markets like China, according to Mahesh Murthy, managing partner of Mumbai-based Seedfund. China, for instance, has developed a replica version of Google search engine called Baidu. It also has its own Facebook in the form of Renren. And it has created the replica of Amazon called Alibaba.

“But Nepal is not like China. And it’s very likely that Google of Nepal will be the [authentic version of] Google itself, and Facebook of Nepal will be Facebook [created by Mark Zuckerberg]. So, don’t try to copy and paste, unless the government creates regulatory barriers to protect the [domestic] market,” Murthy told the NEXT Growth Conclave, a one-day seminar organised by M&S NEXT Venture Corp in Kathmandu on Sunday to promote start-up culture in the country.

Murthy, who has an employment history of around 35 years and has invested in start-up companies for the last 17 years, was of the view that “what works in one market may not work in the other”, as billions of dollars have been spent to create the next Amazon and Facebook and “they have failed”.

“So, create a product that creates delight. For this, your product needs to be different than others. [With this combination], that product can dominate the market,” Murthy told over 500 participants of the first-of-its-kind conference titled “Decoding Business Growth”, which brought together 12 prominent speakers from Bangladesh, China, Hong Kong, India, Nepal and Thailand.

Murthy was trying to drive home the point that only companies that can create a niche for themselves can survive in this competitive world.

But how to come up with such an idea? Or, rather, how to create an entrepreneurial mindset that has the ability to think differently?

For this, one has to be motivated to learn, according to Joseph Jeong, founder of Hong Kong-based Oracle Strategies Cyberport. “Earlier, our brain was used as a hard drive to remember things,” Jeong explained. “Today, [because of digital revolution], our brain has started operating as a CPU [central processing unit], because everything one wants to learn is online. So, if you are willing to learn, you can find a mentor online.”

This learning might help one find passion and purpose, which will enable the aspiring entrepreneurs to set the “moonshot” goal, according to Jeong.

So, what can those “moonshot” goals be?

It can be anything, and you might stumble upon one, if you look around, identify problems and think of ways to create values, according to Sambhav Sirohiya, founding chairman of M&S NEXT Venture Corp.

“The biggest opportunities lie in biggest troubles.... Look around, we are living in one of the world’s poorest countries. As sad as it sounds, opportunities are sitting right here in front of you. So don’t focus on creating another website or another social media site. Think of bio-technology, robotics, 3D printers, and ending world poverty,” Sirohiya said, adding, success lies in creating values—true and honest values.

NEXT Launchpad rolled out

M&S NEXT Venture Corp on Sunday launched “NEXT Launchpad”, a mentorship-driven start-up accelerator programme, which prepares entrepreneurs. At the Launchpad, budding entrepreneurs go through four months of intensive learning and are taught how to refine business models, says the company. The mentors of the Launchpad are industry experts and veterans. The programme concludes when entrepreneurs present their growing companies to investors to secure funding. (PR)
