Welcome to another edition of our series on paid iPhone and iPad apps that go on sale for free for a limited time. Today’s post is peppered with terrific apps, and the list once again includes the always entertaining game Goat Simulator. There’s plenty more than  just goats in Wednesday’s post though, so be sure to check out all of the apps below before these sales end.

These are paid iPhone and iPad apps that have been made available for free for a limited time by their developers. There is no way to tell how long they will be free. These sales could end an hour from now or a week from now — obviously, the only thing we can guarantee is that they were free at the time this post was written. If you click on a link and see a price listed next to an app instead of the word “get,” it is no longer free. The sale has ended. If you download the app, you will be charged.

Six months after iOS users were given access to Google’s Gboard, the tech giant is finally rolling it out for Android devices.

The keyboard comes as an update to the standard Google Keyboard, and has a Google search bar built right into the app.

Like its iOS counterpart, users can easily find and share information, GIFs and emojis based on their text - and it is designed with Glide Typing.

Gboard comes as an update to the Google Keyboard, which offers a Google search bar built right into the top row. Like its iOS counterpart, Users can easily find and share information, GIFs and emojis based on their text - and it is designed with Glide Typing

Google announced the release on iOS back in May and the tech giant said it would eventually hit Android devices.

Although it took six months, the tech giant is keeping to its promises and the search-centric keyboard is now available for the other half.

Its currently available as an separate app from Google, but should make its way over to the Play Store, as it was designed to replace the Google Keyboard altogether.

A Google logo is shown on the keyboard, which represents the search engine for looking up information to send – such as restaurant locations, reports Ars Technica.

There is also the highly anticipated emoji search.

Users simply tap on the emoji button and a search field will appear – allowing you to search terms to find the right emoji.

The keyboard also has a GIF search, which will drop an animated image right into your chat window.

Gboard feels like all of your favorite text apps combined into one location.

Android had an interesting year. From its best flagship literally exploding to Google dropping a set of new phones and a new digital assistant, there was a lot to keep developers on their toes.

Luckily, the Android community was as reliable as ever at turning out creative, fun and seriously useful apps.

From photo retouching to hopelessly addictive games and new ways to call and message friends, here are all the Android apps we couldn't live without in 2016.

1. Adobe Photoshop Fix

Adobe's retouching app, Photoshop Fix, brings some of Photoshop's most useful tools to your phone. It offers a suite of retouching tools to fix imperfections in your photos along with standard editing controls to help you make quick lighting adjustments and other tweaks on the fly.

2. Anchor

Think of Anchor as podcasting meets the social network. Record one or two-minute audio clips about any topic and other users can join in the conversation by adding their own recording. The result is a nearly endless stream of surprisingly thought-provoking discussions.

3. CastBox

CastBox is the rare podcast client that not only handles all your subscriptions and playlists, but also puts discovery front and center to make it easier for you to find new shows. The app recommends podcasts based on your interests and makes it easy to browse and search for specific titles. And with features like sleep timers, light and dark themes and mood-based playlists, it will make each podcast feel like it was made for you.

4. Face Changer 2

Thanks in large part to Snapchat, the face swap craze was real this year. Luckily, Face Changer 2 was there to help make all your ridiculous selfie dreams come true. The app lets you transform any photo on your phone with hundreds of crazy effects. Or you can use the in-app camera to face-swap with friends in real time.

5. Giphy Cam

One of Giphy's wackier apps, Giphy Cam lets you create delightful mashups of photos, illustrations, filters and other effects and turn them into endlessly shareable GIFs. The results are hilarious  and dangerously addictive.

6. Google Allo

We get it — you probably don't need another messaging app in your life, but Google Allo is worth the extra effort. Yes, it has all the standard messaging features — fun sticker packs, voice messaging, doodling on photos — and then some. For one, Google's Assistant is built right in so you can get answers to questions you'd normally need a Google search for right in your chats. Better still, on Android you can chat with Google Assistant to get information about what's on your calendar  and more.

7. Google Duo

Due, Google's answer to Apple's Face Time, is the dead-simple video calling app Android users have been waiting for. Just find the person you want to call and video calls are one-touch away. The person you're calling can even see your face before they pick up thanks to the "Knock Knock" feature.

8. Hound

You might know SoundHound for its music recognition app, but this year the company put its voice recognizing powers to new use with this new digital assistant app. Hound is able to answer complex questions and links to other services (like Yelp and Uber) to help with tasks like finding a restaurant or hailing a car. It gets even more useful on Android as you can set Hound as your default search app.

9. Identity

Getting a new credit card pretty much sucks when you have to spend hours updating your information on every service. LifeLock's Identity keeps track of all your accounts, so when you get a new card or address all you have to do is tell the app which accounts to update. It even connects to your password manager and email so you don't need to remember what information you need for each account.

10. Merged

Maybe the most addictive puzzle game we played this year, Merged seems simple at first: you match up similar colors to form combos of increasingly higher numbers. Match up three "M" tiles to explode the surrounding pieces. There's more than meets the eye though as you quickly learn you need to figure out the right strategy to get to a new high score.

11. Opera Free VPN

From the company behind the browser of the same name, Opera VPN is a fast, unlimited and free VPN service. Perfect for getting around location-based content restrictions, the app allows you to choose between five regions — the United States, Canada, Germany, Singapore and the Netherlands — to use as your location.

12. Slash Keyboard

One of the best third-party keyboard apps finally landed on Android with Slash Keyboard. A multitasker's dream come true, the app allows you to access dozens of services right from your keyboard so you can search Google, share a location or file, and search your contacts without leaving your chats.

The company hopes to address historical quality problems with a matching algorithm.

There was a time that “answer engines” or “social search” appeared poised to be a viable alternative to traditional Google search. That never happened. Some sites faded and a few have soldiered on, offering occasional value (and entertainment) to users with esoteric or specific questions.

Somewhat ironically, discovery of those answers typically happens through conventional search results and SEO.

Yahoo Answers is one of the early players and a survivor of the “answer wars” of several years ago. The company just introduced a new mobile version called Yahoo Answers Now. Aside from an onerous sign-up and sign-in process, it offers a relatively nice UX and searchable content.

screen-shot-2016-12-09-at-7-25-52-am

The promise of sites like Yahoo Answers and newer sites such as Jelly (from Biz Stone) is that you’ll get a very specific response to your very specific question. The expectation created is (near) real-time responses from knowledgeable humans.

Sometimes that happens. More often, however, there’s a meaningful delay between the submission of the question and the receipt of the answer. And often the quality of answers is less than desirable.

Yahoo Answers has the benefit of a huge content archive and a large community. It has tried to address quality issues in various ways over time, including through voting. In Answers Now, it’s using a matching algorithm to send questions to “qualified responders who have the experiences and expertise to provide a high-quality answer.”

At one time, Google, Amazon and Facebook were all playing in this segment. All have since exited the space. Quora still exists, and so do Answers.com and ChaCha, among some other stragglers. There are other Q&A communities that remain as well, such as Stack Exchange.

The promise of these “answer engines,” however, has never really been fulfilled. Perhaps a messaging-based app will one day deliver.

Google’s flagship mobile application is getting a big makeover today, with a focus on making it easier to separate the things you need to know about – like upcoming appointments or flights -from the things you’re interested in, like news, sports, and entertainment. The app still maintains its previous card-style design, but it now offers two different sections to better organize its content: your feed, and the “upcoming” section.

In the upcoming section, which is accessed by tapping on the bottom-right icon, Google will present you with information about your day, like your schedule, travel time for your commute, package delivery details, flight info, boarding passes, and more. This is the same sort of information that the intelligent assistant Google Now has been pulling into the app for years by leveraging data pulled from other Google services you use, like your Gmail, Calendar, or Google Maps, for example.

Interestingly, Google has decided to make the news feed the default feed instead of the ‘upcoming’ feed with your personal agenda. With the revamped app, this personal feed now becomes the app’s main section, and will be filled with info on your favorite sports teams, people of interest, music and other news stories. This means that more mission-critical information is now no longer buried in the same feed where you’re keeping up with the other things you care about, but it’s also not visible by default either. You have to tap into the ‘upcoming’ feed now and it doesn’t look like there’s a way to change this.

You can continue to customize this feed as before, by heading into the app’s settings. Here, you can tell the app which stocks to track, which sports teams you like, and so on. In addition, Google says that this feed will become more personalized and relevant over time, the more you use Google and the app.

The idea here is clearly to make the feed feel more organized and ensure that vital information doesn’t get lost in what could at times be a messy list of disparate items. It’s easy enough to toggle between the two section, but the choice of defaulting to the news feed seems odd.

finaltake_2

While Google’s app has excelled at being a stepping off point to the larger web, and a useful utility when it comes to things like planning your commute or checking your schedule, it hasn’t been as successful as a personal assistant that knows what you care about.

Unless you’ve explicitly programmed in things in the settings (e.g. your stocks, your teams, etc.), the app seems to rely too much on your prior Google Search history when presenting news articles to read.

With the redesign, Google’s aim, apparently, is to put the “interests” section front-and-center, which could increase users’ interactions with its content. This, in turn, could better personalize the feed and increase its relevancy, when before it seemed to be more of an echo of past searches.

In addition, Google is releasing another new feature that will help to program the feed better.

Starting in the U.S. it will show a card right within the feed that lets you select from topics of interest that you want to see more stories or information about. This helps to solve the “cold start” problem for those who haven’t spent as much time using the app or placing relevant searches on Google.

The update is rolling out, starting today with the Google app on Android and iOS.

Flipboard

Flipboard

For many, Flipboard is the default news app for Android. It's been around for a while and was one of the first apps to make reading the news less boring with its image-heavy, magazine-style layout.

One of the other merits to Flipboard is its customization. It's your news, your way. So beyond selecting topic areas of interest, you can also add in your own feeds so you're missing out on nothing.

Flipboard to this day makes reading the news a pleasure.

BBC News

Britain's national broadcaster delivers the news around the globe through round-the-clock TV broadcasts, but it also has itself a pretty nice Android app to deliver what's going on in the world today.

It'll also deliver that round-the-clock video coverage, though that might be dependent on location. Otherwise you're looking at breaking news, a wide range of topics to follow and an offline mode so you can catch up on a plane or on the morning commute on the London Underground.

Google News and Weather

If all you want is a simple app to show you the headlines and maybe the daily weather, check out Google News and Weather. It pulls in sources from Google's vast network that includes aggregated 65,000 publications.

It lacks some of the customization available elsewhere but it's a more 'no-frills' approach to serving you the headlines. And it has a nifty looking dark theme, too, if you like those.

Microsoft's news app is actually pretty good, though it may also have slipped your attention so far. If you have a Microsoft account you can sign in and keep your customizations in sync across devices, which includes your Windows 10 PC.

Feedly

Feedly

If you prefer to get your news delivered in RSS form, Feedly is pretty much the default choice these days. Rising from the ashes of the Google Reader shut down, Feedly has evolved and refined its service and app, and it's a pretty good choice all round.

Feedly also integrates with Facebook, Twitter, Evernote, Buffer, OneNote, Pinterest and LinkedIn for social sharing of all the things and the app itself is a pretty good reading experience. It's pretty light and snappy these days and it doesn't try to cram too much in.

Nuzzel lets you discover the best news stories shared by your friends on Facebook and Twitter without the rest of the noise that goes along with social media feeds. Another key differentiator for Nuzzel is their belief in the power of the email newsletter. You can sign up for newsletters from your favourite influencers or topics, or use Nuzzel to create your own and share the top 5 stories from your Nuzzel feed along with your own personal commentary

It's easy to scroll through the discover page and find topic feeds that interest you organized by topic. Add topics of interest to your favorite and sign up to receive daily email newsletters with the top stories of the day. News Republic

One of News Republic's best features is its 'smart' capabilities, meaning it learns your preferences as you use it. Then, in turn, caters more to your individual tastes without you having to set your own preferences.

Google has released an update to its mobile app which sees the cards reorganized into one section for personal interests, and another section for upcoming information. This update is available now for Android and is coming soon to iOS.

On the personal interests side you’ll find the latest on sports, news, and entertainment — tailored to you based on your search history. On the upcoming information side you’ll find the latest about what’s going on in your day from calendar events, to flight times, to traffic conditions.

Here is a look at how you can seamlessly switch back and forth between the two sections:

finalTake_2_3U6SwbL

The greatest benefit of this update is that you can more easily access the information you need when you need it. If you’re on the go and just need a quick look at what’s coming up next in your day, now all of that information is separated from the other cards.

On your leisure time you can keep up with the things you care about by flipping over to the current topics dashboard. This section contains the latest information about sports teams, people of interest, music, and news stories.

The Google app’s current topics dashboard is personalized based on an individual’s search history. To further assist Google in this process, US searchers will soon see a card where they can select the topics they’d like to see more updates about.
