When you’re not feeling well, it’s natural to want to find out what’s wrong. And the idea of doing so from the comfort of your own home without the hassle of a doctor’s visit is appealing. So appealing, in fact, a survey by Pew Research Center found that more than thirty-five percent of Americans had gone online to self-diagnose their symptoms. (Topping the list are pregnancy symptoms, flu symptoms and diabetes symptoms.) Sounds harmless, right? Actually, no.

If you tend to search online when you’re not feeling well, make sure you are following these steps:

1. Use trusted sites

You can’t trust everything you see on the Internet – from photoshopped images to opinions disguised as news. Unfortunately, there’s even more bad health information. Stick to searching on reputable websites like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Be especially wary of sites that are selling supplements, foods or anything health-related that sounds too good to be true. (Spoiler: It is!)

2. Don’t read only one diagnosis.

A study, published in the British Medical Journal, found that the correct diagnosis was only returned as the top search result thirty-four percent of the time on twenty-three sites that are self-billed “symptom-checkers”. It is better to read a handful of results: half the sites had the right diagnosis in the top three and nearly sixty percent had it in the top twenty.

3. Talk to a doctor about your suspected diagnosis.

No matter what you find, it’s important to have you doctor confirm your diagnosis. The Pew survey found that thirty-five percent of respondents did not get a second opinion, but of those that did, only forty-one percent had their suspicions confirmed by a medical professional.

4. Don’t stress out about your possible imagined health condition.

If you’re the type of person who gets easily stressed by uncertainty, you should be especially cautious of googling your symptoms, cautions one study. You may have a condition dubbed “cyberchondria”, the online version of hypochondria, where you think every symptom applies to you. For example, mistaking a simple tension headache for a brain tumor, for example. This can cause you to worry unnecessarily, visit the doctor more than necessary and demand too many tests or even medications you don’t really need.

While search engines can empower us with information, online research is no substitute for a physician’s diagnosis. If you believe something is wrong, reach out to your primary care physician for help. Not only can you count on their diagnosis, but can immediately receive steps for treatment.

A new survey of internet users suggests that people who use the internet excessively may have more mental health problems. Using two scales to evaluate internet use, researchers have found high rates of problematic internet use in a group of primarily college-aged students.  The researchers evaluated internet addiction using the Internet Addiction Test, as well as newer scale of their own design, based on updated addiction criteria. This work may have implications for how psychiatrists approach excessive internet use.

The unstoppable rise of the internet has given rise to fears that increasing numbers people are becoming unable to cope without regularly going online. The Internet Addiction Test (IAT) is the standard test used to measure excessive reliance on the internet, but as Chief Researcher Michael Van Ameringen pointed out: "The IAT was developed in 1998, prior to the widespread use of smartphone technology. In addition, internet use has changed radically over the last 18 years, through more people working online, media streaming, social media, etc. We were concerned that the IAT questionnaire may not have been picking up on problematic modern internet use, or showing up false positives for people who were simply using the internet rather than being over-reliant on it."

Professor Van Ameringen's group, from McMaster University in Canada, surveyed 254 students and correlated internet use with general mental health and wellbeing. Thirty-three of the students met screening criteria for internet addition according to the Internet Addiction Test. However, 107 students met criteria for problematic internet use using Professor Van Ameringen and colleagues' new screening tool. The research team also administered a further series of self-reported tests to see how the internet addicts compared to the others in the survey on areas such as symptoms of depression and anxiety, impulsiveness, inattention and executive functioning, as well as tests for ADHD.

Professor Van Ameringen said: "We found that those screening positive on the IAT as well as on our scale, had significantly more trouble dealing with their day to day activities, including life at home, at work/school and in social settings. Individuals with internet addiction also had significantly higher amounts of depression and anxiety symptoms, problems with planning and time management, greater levels of attentional impulsivity as well as ADHD symptoms. This leads us to a couple of questions: firstly, are we grossly underestimating the prevalence of internet addiction and secondly are these other mental health issues a cause or consequence of this excessive reliance on the internet?

This may have practical medical implications. If you are trying to treat someone for an addiction when in fact they are anxious or depressed, then you may be going down the wrong route. We need to understand this more, so we need a bigger sample, drawn from a wider, more varied population."

Commenting Professor Jan Buitelaar (Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre) of the ECNP Child and adolescent disorders treatment Scientific Advisory Panel said: "Excessive use of the internet is an understudied phenomenon that may disguise mild or severe psychopathology; excessive use of the internet may be strongly linked to compulsive behaviour and addiction; as the authors say, further study is needed in larger populations."

Mobile health has experienced dynamic growth during the past 2 years. All smartphone platforms now have a wide range of apps for management of medical conditions, fitness, and home health monitoring. As consumers become more comfortable with smartphones, their use of apps to manage health and fitness will increase. This is an update to a previous article where we analyzed search trends in Mobile Health using Google Trends.

Google Trends allows users to search its database for trends in search data. The data are scaled from 0 to 100 and plotted over a time scale to create a line graph, with 100 being the peak popularity for a particular search term. Users can compare up to five search terms and apply various filters to refine their search. While search trends might not directly reflect the popularity of apps, it does give a sense of search interest.

Fitness, Health, and APIs

Fitness apps have consistently been the most popular way consumers utilize Mobile Health. Before 2014, the general term “fitness app” was the most popular search term when compared to other popular Mobile Health terms. This changed in 2014 when there was a spike in searches for “health app”.

This change happened in conjunction with innovations in mobile health, and can be tied to the introduction of Google and Apple’s health APIs for their respective mobile platforms. Google Fit APIs were introduced during the 2014 Google I/O conference, and Apple introduced HealthKit during WWDC 2014. The spike in “health app” correlates with searches for apple and google’s APIs as seen below:

Now that specific products have been developed for these platforms, “health app” has trended back down to nearly the same level as the term “fitness app”. Health and fitness have been trending more than apps for specific medical conditions, and 2014 saw the largest growth for the field.

In comparison to health and fitness, searches for medical apps specific to common diseases were less frequent. Fitness and health apps had to be excluded in order to see a difference between apps for medical conditions. There are many reasons for this disparity. Compared to fitness, medical diagnoses like diabetes currently do not share the same appeal of posting significant milestones online. Social interactions within apps are a major reason for generating interest and participation, an appeal that most medical apps lack. Fitness applications are also marketable to a broader segment of the consumer market. Health and Fitness apps typically require minimal user input as activity data is tracked automatically from wearable tech and mobile devices. This is in comparison to most diabetes monitoring apps which still require manual input of blood glucose levels. These advantages over medical conditions could account for the increased popularity of health and fitness apps.

There is also a distinct separation of popularity between specific diagnoses. The general term “medical app” remains the most frequent search term. Searches for “Pregnancy app” were higher than other medical conditions such as diabetes, cholesterol, and blood pressure. This is despite the fact that there are more people with these chronic medical problems when compared to pregnancies. There are several factors that could explain this difference. The targeted demographics differ, with the majority of those in childbearing age now being millennials who have grown up with mobile technology. The diagnosis of pregnancy carries an intensive period afterwards where patients seek progressive education and guidance. It is intuitive that younger generations of consumers are more likely to utilize apps as a resource for knowledge and guidance in health. Pregnancy is unique in that it carries discrete stages of progression, while other conditions focus on maintaining goals. Apps for pregnancy also typically don’t require manual input of health data. The popularity of pregnancy apps on Google searches are due to the advantages they have over other chronic conditions.

Medical conditions have different rates of growth on Google Trends. Pregnancy apps show the highest growth rate, while cholesterol app searches remain flat. Blood pressure apps have seen a recent increase in the last two years as more compatible home blood pressure devices have been introduced to the consumer market. New devices and wearable tech that can utilize APIs to automate health data tracking could renew interest in chronic medical conditions. Searches for diabetes apps have seen minimal growth, but as new developments allows for wireless syncing of data from insulin pumps and CGMs, search trends may increase like blood pressure apps have.

Regional Impact

Google Trends has the ability to display patterns of search trends regionally. The United States remains the leading country in searches for medical apps while Australia leads in health and fitness.

Search patterns also correlate with cultural norms. There are yearly spikes in North American searches for “Health App” during January, where New Year resolutions abound. These patterns are not as evident in Australia, despite the country leading the world in searches for fitness. Australia also shares in the practice of New Years Resolutions, but Australians are known for having a high priority in their fitness culture, which may not be affected by New Year resolutions as with Americans.

Consumers are showing increasing interest in using apps to manage their health and medical conditions. Google Trends is an interesting way to examine this interest through the use of their search engine. Some surprising findings were the popularity of pregnancy apps over more common medical conditions. This popularity can be attributed to millennials becoming the primary demographic for this product. It can be anticipated that as more millennials transition to an age range where chronic medical conditions are common, they will turn towards mobile health as a resource to learn and manage their new diagnoses.

Health and fitness apps saw spikes of searches in 2014 due to innovations from major smartphone developers. APIs have made it easier for developers to integrate the massive amount of data that wearables and mobile devices have been collecting. The differentiation between “health” and “fitness” apps may disappear as fitness data becomes integrated into overall health management. As evidenced in 2014, health apps will have a greater role in consumer use, especially as these platforms develop more ways to help impact health outcomes. Apple has recently partnered with the Mayo Clinic and Epic, which are potential ways to integrate health data with EHRs in a meaningful way for providers to make healthcare decisions for patients.

Regional differences may be evidence that marketing during the new year for fitness apps may hold more impact for North America but may be negligible in countries like Australia. Newer generations of users will look for apps to maintain their health and learn about how to manage new medical diagnoses. As mobile platforms find better ways to integrate social engagement, effectively use health data, and integrate with medical management, consumers and healthcare providers will have powerful tools to manage health.

Indeed, a new survey for The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) found 43 per cent of people admit to using painkillers that have been prescribed to someone else after diagnosing themselves online.

    And the RPS have issued a stark warning that self diagnosing runs the risk of taking misleading advice or missing key symptoms.

    Of course, in this age of instant access, it’s not surprising that Google is the first port of call for many people with worrying symptoms.

    But there’s a real danger of not receiving timely treatment for potentially serious problems or, at the other end of the scale, of becoming seriously distressed when you self-diagnose a life-threatening condition that you don’t have.

    Hay fever misery as the pollen season starts

      Among the most common symptoms typed into a search engine are nausea, chest pain and tiredness.

      Diarrhoea, child rashes, spots, sore throats and headache are also popular, along with back pain and a cough.

      Robin Berzin, MD, founder of Parsley Health, told Cosmopolitan: "Spending time furiously searching symptoms on your iPhone, then declaring you've got X, Y, or Z can be downright dangerous.

      "First off, it can keep you from getting the help you actually need."

        Highlighting the dangers, the medical expert added: "A lot of times, people read a personal story and they say, Hey, that sounds like me. That's my problem too!' and they get very worked up, and may even take a course of action that isn't actually relevant to them."

        Medical experts say you should always seek the advice of a professional - so no more DIY diagnosing, folks.

        Intrusions Upon the Real World

        Technology overload seems to be affecting not just a single demographic but anyone who has multiple devices. While having these devices has caused people to become high-level multi-taskers, it has left many without any time to themselves. At one point, work was something you go to, but now smartphones have made work much more; you carry it around wherever you go. While technology overload isn’t a medically recognized disorder, it can easily be seen thanks to research into the habits of people and organizations that have used or over relied on technology.

        In an article titled “Does the Internet Increase Anxiety?” freelance writer Ned Smith, who is also a former senior writer at international consulting firm Sweeney Vesty and vice president of communications for iQuest Analytics, stated, “The promise of the digital age has been that constant connectedness will increase productivity and effectiveness, but the opposite has turned out to be true. The constant onslaught of information from smartphones, computers, and other digital devices has actually decreased productivity, creativity, and the quality of personal relationships. Information overload and the multitasking required by today’s digital demands make people feel like there is too much to do and that life is spinning out of control.”

        While the quality of relationships, time and productivity on a personal level is important, companies are losing out financially as well. Within the same article, Smith stated, “Basex, a research firm that specializes in technical issues in the workplace, reckons that information overload is responsible for economic losses of $900 billion a year at work.”

        How to Set Boundaries

        One of the first steps to limit your technology usage is to set boundaries. You may wonder how to accomplish these steps. Many social scientists, researchers, and advocates of limiting technology have opinions and real data on what methods to take to help alleviate these symptoms.

        1. Do things in a sequential order

        Dr. Joanne Cantor, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison stated within the same article that you should limit your multi-tasking and focus more on single tasking. “Do one thing at a time,” she said. “You’ll find you actually save time.” Focusing on single-tasking instead and committing to longer goals can help you be more productive.

        2. Be the master of your own interruptions

        Learning how not to respond is easier said than done especially when it has become instantaneous. Besides single tasking, checking your phone every hour can devolve into every minute. The idea is to not be on available 24/7 for every single thing. While some calls, emails and texts will be more urgent than others, you should set aside blocks of time every so often to check emails and text messages.

        3. Take the time to recharge

         Technology also makes work better but at the same time longer than before and can even cause you to work outside of the office. “Research shows that information overload interferes with your ability to think outside the box,” Cantor said. Work is good, but leisure is needed to get the most out of work. Channel energy into other hobbies such as fitness, cooking, drawing or playing musical instruments. These activities focus more on single sequential tasks instead of juggling multiple things at a time.

        Since the groundbreaking creation of the Internet, there has been a constant innovation that we have benefited from. Making our lives easier, faster and safer than ever before, something like technology is a double-edged sword. Normal usage of the multiple devices around us can push people further into addiction-like qualities, causing an overload of information around us. Smartphones and computers can work tirelessly while humans cannot; that is why it is important that researchers tell you to recharge yourself by stepping away from the deluge of information once in a while.

        An agonising headache that just won’t go away – but at what point should the feeling sorry for yourself give way to genuine concern?

        In the past, that would’ve been a question exclusively directed at your GP.

        But, increasingly people are turning to the internet in their quest for an answer to their health fears.

        Google’s symptom search function allows people to ask about symptoms, and collates a list of related conditions, possible information and suggests when it is important to visit a doctor

        Indeed, search engine giant, Google estimates one per cent of the millions of searches performed each day, are symptom related.

        And whereas once upon a Google search, you would’ve been inundated with a deluge of links to health forums, blogs, NHS Choices pages and other potentially alarming information, the new reality is changing the face of the internet diagnosis.

        Now the new Google symptom checker, designed in conjunction with experts from the prestigious Harvard Medical School and Mayo Clinic, aims to make navigating health content online a less daunting ordeal.

        The tool allows people to ask about symptoms, such as a “headache on one side”.

        And the result is a list of related conditions, for example headache, migraine, tension headache, cluster headache, sinusitis and the common cold.
