NASA has rolled out a searchable online archive that assembles more than 140,000 media files for users to search from.

Users can type in a single word to surface all of NASA’s files linked to that term, which they can then download or even embed in their own sites. That includes images, audio files and videos drawn from more than 60 collections of media over nearly 100 years.

Thanks to NASA's public images policy, all of the images are copyright free - including captions and metadata.

This public site runs on NASA’s cloud-native technology, allowing the public to access the files on demand. Although it is not comprehensive, "[The library] provides the best of what NASA makes publicly available from a single point of presence on the web," NASA's John Yembric said in a statement. "Additionally, it is a living website, where new and archival images, video and audio files continually will be added."

So what are you waiting for? Go snag yourself a stellar new space background for your phone or computer. Fair warning: these photos are so mesmerising, you might get lost in space for a while.

Doctor appointment booking platform Zocdoc is launching a new, smarter search feature to its offering on both mobile and desktop. Now, the ability to find and schedule doctor visits will become more personalized and approachable with Zocdoc’s Patient Powered Search engine, which employs machine learning and natural language processing to make the experience more conversational.

The idea is to take the onus off patients to know exactly what they are looking for, including proper terminology to accurately describe a condition. The Patient Powered Search engine can recognize more everyday human language, including vague searches like “hurt wrist” or misspelled medical conditions. It even has a limited emoji vocabulary.

“Millions of patients come to Zocdoc each month to find and book appointments with healthcare providers across more than 50 specialties … This is no small feat, considering the healthcare industry uses academic terminology and alphabetized lists of hard-to-spell specialties to categorize and deliver care,” the company wrote in a blog post. “At the same time, according to the CDC, nine in ten Americans struggle to understand jargon-filled health information. This disconnect between medical speak and patients’ own colloquial language – think ‘gyno’ not ‘obstetrician-gynecologist’ – can frustrate, intimidate or even deter patients in their searches. This is especially concerning at the critical moment when patients are motivated to seek care.”

Zocdoc developed the beta version of the Patient Powered Search based on data they have gathered over the past 10 years since launching, and built a machine-learning algorithm using existing medical literature gathered online. Using aggregated data in a method knows as semantic search technology, the search engine has learned natural human communication and mapped commonly used terms to the appropriate corresponding medical term, visit reason or procedure. It is then paired with string-matching technology to retrieve relevant results.

“Additionally, during our beta period, some of the most common searches were simply-put symptoms, conditions or even body parts, such as ‘stomach,’ ‘TMJ’ and ‘tonsil.’ which, thanks to our algorithm, now successfully map to gastroenterologists, prosthodontists and ENTs,” the company wrote. “We are also using machine learning to aggregate intent, and prioritize and re-rank search results based on patient behaviors so the most popular search selections will appear at the top. This allows us to continually learn what patients are looking for, and adjust results based on trends or new needs.”

Zocdoc’s original service, which is available on iOS and Android devices, is targeted at consumers. The app asks for a user’s zip code and insurance provider and then lists nearby doctors and their availability. Users can then select a time to complete the appointment booking. Since October 2012, Zocdoc has also offered a check-in feature so that patients can also send over a basic medical history before they arrive instead of filling out the medical history clipboard. But Zocdoc has been moving beyond appointment booking for a while. In 2015, the company announced it had raised $130 million to do just that.

In June 2014, ZocDoc launched a premium service that employers can offer their employees, called Zocdoc for Business. This was Zocdoc’s first offering for employers. Zocdoc for Business launched with a handful of customers, including Foursquare, Gilt, IAC, Jefferies, NASDAQ OMX, and Quirky.

“Patient-Powered Search lays an important foundation for the future – it gives Zocdoc, our patients, and our partners an unmatched advantage when it comes to healthcare search, discovery and booking,” the company wrote.  “And, most importantly, it furthers our core mission to give power to the patient – putting patients’ needs at the center of our product innovation to remove friction throughout their healthcare journey.”

REDMOND, Wash., March 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Last week, AOL shut down DMOZ.com, the official homepage of the DMOZ Internet Directory. However, the directory was quickly re-launched at DMOZLive.com. The new site represents the final iteration of the human-curated Internet directory and includes the same powerful browsing and searching tools. The DMOZLive.com version of the directory is made available through a Creative Commons Attribution license from the DMOZ organization.

"While automated search engines have become standard, we believe there's still value in human curation, as evidenced by site traffic data," says DMOZLive.com Founder Douglas Olson. "Humans are still better at understanding the content, motive and quality of web pages, and organization that information in a comprehensible way. It's worth noting that the search engine titans like Bing and Google continue to employ humans to test their automated systems, so even they recognize this fact.

Moreover, DMOZ is an important piece of Internet history, as its roots go all the way back to 1998. We felt it was important to preserve this resource and the countless hours of mostly volunteer work it represents."

DMOZ Live
DMOZ Live

The official DMOZ site, which was owned and operated by AOL, helped millions of Internet users make sense of the web and discover practical resources that may otherwise have gone unknown. A small army of volunteer editors worked to maintain the directory, which received several million page views each week. AOL has not commented on its closure of the site, and only provided two weeks notice prior to closure.

DMOZLive.com is now home to the only remaining full-featured version of the DMOZ Internet Directory, which comprises over 3.5 million sites across 800,000 categories. Typical categories range from business, computers, games and the arts to news and shopping. Within each top-level category are numerous subcategories, many of which have subcategories of their own, and so on. The result is a hierarchy of relevant content moving from the general to the specific in a way that feels natural to human users. This structure has been largely unchanged since the directory's creation in 1998.

As a global project, the directory includes regional content in 91 languages. Pages in Arabic and Hebrew are formatted with the appropriate right-to-left text. Users can search the full text of directory categories as well as individual site descriptions in any of the 91 available languages. The current version of the DMOZ Internet Directory also boasts a clean, modern interface that makes for easy navigation.

Easily the most unique and powerful feature of DMOZLive.com is the ability to execute a wide range of custom searches. Above each list of categorized web sites, a custom search bar encourages users to "search the below sites." With this feature, users are assured that a specific, targeted search will not return the flood of generalized and often irrelevant results typical of broader search engines. Mining the web's information to uncover knowledge has always been a challenge, but DMOZLive.com has been designed to make the task a little easier.

"Finally, we want to express our sincere thanks to the dedicated DMOZ editors around the world who have helped keep the Open Directory Project moving forward," added Olson. "DMOZ has always represented the very best of the web and of the human spirit of discovery, cooperation and sharing. We're proud to continue making the final version of the DMOZ Internet Directory available for as long as possible."

Now every company can easily monetize their data by letting everyone both inside and outside an organization use search to analyze their enterprise data in seconds.

New Extended Enterprise Edition lets customers and OEM partners easily embed ThoughtSpot's Relational Search into their apps, extranets, and B2B portals designed for employees, partners, or customers.

Next generation scale-out architecture combined with unlimited user licensing designed to support millions of users.

PALO ALTO, Calif. and GRAPEVINE, Texas, March 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- ThoughtSpot, the leader in search-driven analytics for the enterprise, today announced the general availability of a new Embedded Analytics solution available with ThoughtSpot's new Extended Enterprise Edition. Recently recognized as a new entrant in the Gartner 2017 Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms report, ThoughtSpot is unveiling this new offering at the Gartner Data and Analytics Summit in Grapevine, TX this week.

ThoughtSpot's Embedded Analytics solution enables organizations to deliver insights to employees, partners, and customers across their extended ecosystem, by infusing search-driven analytics into their custom business applications, B2B portals, and workflows. Through the power of Relational Search, ThoughtSpot vastly expands the reach of business intelligence so everyone both inside and outside the enterprise can now benefit from a search-driven experience to analyze data in seconds.

Easy-to-use analytics capabilities are no longer a nice-to-have for modern software solution providers and enterprises alike. As massive amounts of data is being generated, it is vital for companies to provide data access to users beyond the enterprise and find new innovative ways to monetize their data. Employees, customers, and partners have long relied on centralized BI or development teams to build reports for data insights. Unfortunately, the further away from these constrained resources, the longer it takes to get answers to data-driven questions. Similarly, solution providers attempting a "build-first" approach to their analytics capabilities have incurred increased costs and longer time-to-market in launching their solutions.

ThoughtSpot Extended Enterprise employs a next-generation analytics architecture powered by Relational Search. This new breed of BI architecture and in-memory calculation engine makes it easy to analyze billions of rows of data across multiple data sources, while delivering sub-second performance and governance at scale. As a result, non-technical business people beyond the boundaries of the enterprise can search to find fast answers to their data questions without relying on data experts. Simple to build, with flexible deployment options and an architecture that scales out with ease, ThoughtSpot Extended Enterprise provides the agility and control so solution providers can get to market fast.

"ThoughtSpot's Embedded Search-Driven Analytics solution lets us deliver data insights directly to our customers in a way that's intuitive and incredibly fast," said Zahra Safavian, VP of Product at SSB Bart. "At SSB Bart, we are creating a world where digital technology can become a profound and empowering force in the lives of users with disabilities. With ThoughtSpot, we will make an impact even faster."

"Search-driven analytics is revolutionizing how employees quickly and easily analyze their company data. We're now thrilled to bring the same ease-of-use and performance-at-scale to our customers' customers and partners," said Ajeet Singh, co-founder and CEO of ThoughtSpot. "Now customers and partners can embed ThoughtSpot's Relational Search into any business application, extranet, or portal. It's now easier than ever for companies to monetize their data with human-scale analytics."

ThoughtSpot's Extended Enterprise capabilities include:

  • Seamless search-driven experience, infused into any application: Rather than waiting weeks or months for a backlogged BI or development team to create rigid charts and dashboards, ThoughtSpot's embedded search-driven approach enables every business person inside or outside the enterprise to use the power of search to get instant answers to their data questions, just as easily as they use search in their personal lives. They can ask as many questions as they want, and be able to answer that next question instantly, without incurring the costs of tapping into constrained data experts to update reports.
  • Fast query performance at scale: ThoughtSpot's next-generation analytics architecture is built from the ground up to deliver access to data at 'human-scale' and enable anyone to analyze their data in seconds. Its Relational Search Engine and built-in in-memory calculation engine makes it easy for millions of users to analyze billions of rows of data across multiple data sources, and delivers sub-second performance. No cubes, aggregations, summary tables or data marts are required to optimize for performance. As a result source data fidelity is maintained, enabling end users to flexibly ask questions on data at any level.
  • Centralized governance and security at scale: Expanding the reach of business intelligence well beyond enterprise boundaries requires a flexible and scalable governance framework that can scale to large numbers of users and security groups. ThoughtSpot provides granular column, object and row-level access control to a single shared data model across billions of records and scales to millions of users and hundreds of thousands of security groups. Fine-grained permissions ensure that only authorized users have access to the right set of data.
  • Flexible deployment options: ThoughtSpot offers many options to rapidly inject analytics in custom applications, portals or workflows. Embedding Relational Search delivers the full power of ThoughtSpot's search-driven experience into any application. Combine that with pluggable charts and dashboards to embed any visualization into an application's workflow. An extensive REST-based Data and Metadata API gives customers complete control to flexibly implement a custom look-and-feel on query result sets from ThoughtSpot. In addition, ThoughtSpot provides custom branding, white-labeling and OEM options to maintain a brand-consistent experience.

ThoughtSpot is a Premier Plus exhibitor at the Gartner Data and Analytics Summit in Grapevine, TX from March 6 - March 9, 2017 and is featuring its Extended Enterprise solution in an informative session on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at 3:45pm CT as well as in Booth #413 in the Solution Showcase.

Pricing and Availability

ThoughtSpot Extended Enterprise is now generally available. ThoughtSpot software can be deployed on-premise or hosted in a cloud-based infrastructure such as Amazon Web Services. New deeper structuring: Product results are now structured such that each product is matched with specific assays and the protocol conditions relevant to those assays. This helps researchers to not only identify the best products to use, but to also decide how to best work with each product in their specific assays. These deep data insights are based on the Bioz platform analyzing and summarizing what has worked for other researchers, as detailed within millions of peer-reviewed life science articles.

More data: An incredible 26 million scientific articles are now available to aid researchers. Moreover, with the new platform, Bioz is updating its article corpus in real-time so that researchers have access to the very latest material.
"We are thrilled to announce our next-generation Bioz platform, offering researchers from around the world an unparalleled resource for advanced objective ratings information and product usage guidance that is based on the source they most trust, scientific articles," said Dr. Karin Lachmi, co-founder, chief scientific officer and president of Bioz. "Bioz is the industry's only life science platform to offer these key information sets, which are necessary for successful experimentation and research. Thus, Bioz' value proposition is focused not only on 'what to buy,' but also on 'how to use it,' which facilitates much faster and better life science research and drug discovery processes that we can all benefit from."

The news follows on the heels of Frost & Sullivan's recent recognition of Bioz, Inc., with its 2017 North American New Product Innovation Award win. Did Yandex's new algorithm Palekh just go head to head with Google's RankBrain?

Yandex announced on their Russian blog that they have launched a new algorithm aimed at improving how they handle long-tail queries. The new algorithm is named Palekh, which is the name of a world-famous Russian city that has a firebird on its coat of arms.

The firebird has a long tail, and Yandex, the largest Russian search engine, used that as code name for long-tail queries. Long-tail queries are several words entered into the search box, more often seen in voice queries these days. Yandex says about 100 million queries per day fall under the “long-tail” classification within their search engine.

The Palekh algorithm allows Yandex to understand the meaning behind every query, and not just look for similar words. Which reminds me of Google RankBrain. I asked Yandex if it is similar to Google’s RankBrain, and they said they “don’t know exactly what’s the technology behind Google’s RankBrain, although these technologies do look quite similar.”

Yandex’s Palekh algorithm has started to use neural networks as one of 1,500 factors of ranking. A Yandex spokesperson told us they have “managed to teach our neural networks to see the connections between a query and a document even if they don’t contain common words.” They did this by “converting the words from billions of search queries into numbers (with groups of 300 each) and putting them in 300-dimensional space — now every document has its own vector in that space,” they told us. “If the numbers of a query and numbers of a document are near each other in that space, then the result is relevant,” they added.

When I asked if they are using machine learning, Yandex said they do use machine learning and explained that they teach their “neural network based on these queries will lead to some advancements in answering conversational based queries in the future.” Adding that they “also have many targets (long click prediction, CTR, “click or not click” models and so on) that are teaching our neural network — our research has showed that using more targets is more effective.”
