Data collection for marketing research is a detailed process where a planned search for all relevant data is made by a researcher. The success of marketing research is contingent on the integrity and relevance of the data. And to a high degree, the quality of the data depends on the methods of data collection used. The selection and use of methods for conducting marketing research require a great deal of experience and expertise in order to correctly gage suitability.

These methods fall into two types of research categories, which are Qualitative Research and Quantitative Research. Qualitative Research is generally used to develop an initial understanding of the problem. It is non-statistical in nature and the answers are derived from the data itself. It is used in exploratory and descriptive research designs. Qualitative data can be procured through a variety of forms like interview transcripts; documents, diaries, and notes made while observing. Quantitative Research, on the other hand, quantifies the data and generalizes the results from the sample to the population.

There are two types of data:

  1. Primary Data – Data that is collected first hand by the researcher. This data is specifically collected for the purpose of the study and addresses the current problem. This is original data that is collected by the researcher first hand.
  2. Secondary Data – Data from other sources that has been already collected and is readily available. This data is less expensive and more quickly attainable from various published sources. Secondary data is extremely useful when primary data cannot be obtained at all.

The challenge lies in the case of method selection for collecting primary data. The method has to be relevant and appropriate. This will be the most important decision prior to beginning market research.

The market research process consists of 6 distinct steps:

  • Step 1 - Determine the research problem and objectives
  • Step 2 - Cultivate the overall research plan
  • Step 3 – Collect the data
  • Step 4 – Analyze the data
  • Step 5 – Present or publish the findings
  • Step 6 – Use the findings to make an informed decision

Respondents have more time to consider their answers and the interviewer can gain a deeper understanding of the validity of a response. How do you research thoroughly, save time, and get directly to the source you wish to find? GIJN’s Research Director Gary Price, who is also editor of InfoDOCKET, and Margot Williams, research editor for investigations at The Intercept, shared their Top 100 Research Tools. Overwhelmed with information; we asked Williams and Price to refine their tools and research strategies down to a Top 10.

What are the bare-essentials for an investigative journalist?

1. Security and Privacy  Security tools have never been more important. There is so much information that you give out without even knowing it. Arm yourself with knowledge. Be aware of privacy issues and learn how to modify your own traceability. This is paramount for your own security and privacy. 2. Find Specialized Sites and Databases  Do not run a generalized blind search. Think about who will have the information that you want to find. Get precise about your keywords. Does the file you are looking for even exist online? Or do you have to get it yourself in some way? Will you have to find an archive? Or get a first person interview? Fine tuning your research process will save you a lot of time.

3. Stay Current Price highly recommends Website Watcher. This tool automates the entire search process by monitoring your chosen web pages, and sends you instant updates when there are changes in the site. 4. Read from Back to Front Where do you start looking for information? Do you start reading the headline or the footnotes? 5. Create Your Own Archive Wayback Machine is a digital archive of the web. This site makes you see archived versions of web pages across time. Most importantly, Price recommended that you use this site to develop your own personal archive. A feature of the Wayback Machine now allows you to archive most webpages and pdf files. Do not keep all your sources on a site you might not always be able to access.

You can now keep the files not only in your own hard drive, but you share them online. 6.Pop up Archive Sick of scanning through podcasts and videos in order to get the information you need? Audio and Video searches are becoming increasingly popular, and can save you an incredible amount of time. This can be done with search engines like Popup Archive and C-SPAN.

7.Ignore Mainstream Media Reports Williams ignores sites like Reddit at all costs. These sites can lead your research astray, and you can become wrapped in knowledge that might later be deemed as false. Price is also wary of Wikipedia, for obvious reasons; any person, anywhere at anytime can change a story as they see fit. Stay curious, and keep digging.

8.Marine Traffic Marinetraffic.com makes it possible to track any kind of boat and real-time ship locations, port arrivals and departures. You can also see the track of the boats and follow the path to any vessel movement. Check out Price’s tutorial video of FlightAware, a data search that traces real time and historical flight movements.

9.Foreign Influence Explorer Needing to find sources on governments and money tracking? Foreign Influence Explorer will make your searches incredibly easy. This search engine makes it possible to track disclosures as they become available, and allows you to find out what people or countries have given money to, with the exact time and dates.

10.If you are going to use Google… Use it well. Google’s potential is rarely reached. For a common search engine, you can get extremely specific results if you know how. Williams explains that the Congress has a terrible search engine on their site, but if you use google you can better refine your search by typing your keywords next to “site:(URL)”. Ask for link backs

You can find information about who is promoting or writing about your product of service and choose the best options for a link back. Give your customers some outrageous offer

How about 90% off or buy 1 get 3 offer? They look attractive and in most of the cases find space in the coupon or discount related websites. Describe your images properly

There are two ways to describe the images. One is for the viewers and second is for the search engines. In the case of the search engines, the crawlers often look for alternate texts for the images and anchor links. Make sure you write a small 5-10 word description with every image. It will increase the penetration of the tags for your website.

Do not concentrate on basic keywords

It is important to make sure the top basic keywords are included in the product page but at the same time, the non-conventional keyphrases related to the product are also important. Make sure to include at least 3-4 such keywords so that people can find the product easily.

Keep analytics handy

The Google analytics is one of the best ways to improve SEO. The Google’s search system loves to promote pages with the content that viewers love. The incoming signals of the visitors are a clear indication of how your content is working. You can emphasis on the niches that are more popular and improve the quality of the website accordingly.

Big words hurt

Have you ever heard of readability score? The highest ranking pages have the score of 70+ and even 75-78. It determines if the page is understandable to people with lower education or not. If the score is 70+ it is understandable to anyone who has passed grade 4. If the score is 50 or less that means the words and sentences are complicated enough even for a 9th-grade pass out. A startup aims to make doing research easier by mining publications for research products, protocols, and potential collaborators.

A good reagent can be hard to find. It typically takes wading through journal articles and published protocols to determine how best to set up an experiment. But a new search engine, Bioz, is hoping to streamline that process. The Palo Alto startup this week (June 20) announced $3 million in seed funding to improve their venture, which is currently in beta.

The site works by using natural language processing and machine learning to mine papers for a treasure-trove of information. A user can enter in a method (“PCR”) or a tool (“DNA polymerase”) and Bioz identifies reagents, ranking them according to how many times they’ve been used in experiments, the impact factor of the journal in which the referenced papers were published, and how recently a product was used.

Each result links to the vendor’s webpage. Bioz receives a lead referral fee, making the service free for users.

In addition, the search engine suggests relevant assays and collaborators, and shows the article context that describes how certain reagents were used.Founder Karin Lachmi of Stanford explained the value of this feature: “Ok, I know what experiment I’m trying to do and I know the product, but now I want to go further,” she told Bio-IT World. “Should I use it at room temperature? Should I use a 1:1,000 dilution or a 1:200 dilution?”

More than 11,000 people across 40 countries are now using the search engine. “The business model for Bioz is around things you can buy, but there’s a subtext that you should be paying attention to everything,” Esther Dyson, who has invested in the company, told Tech Crunch. “And Bioz can help you find all those external factors you may not be noticing.”
