GOOGLE Chrome users can now download a new update which could make surfing the web on the market-leading browser faster than ever before.

Google Chrome is undoubtedly the world’s most popular browser - and it doesn’t look like it will be giving up that crown anytime soon.

Latest figures from NetMarketShare analyzing web browser usage for the first seven months of 2018 put Google Chrome in a hugely commanding lead.

Their stats give Google Chrome a massive 62.43 percent slice of the web browser market.

Chrome’s nearest rival, Internet Explorer, languishes behind on 11.90 percent with Firefox is not far off on 10.30 percent.

Microsoft’s newer Edge browser, which is bundled in with Windows 10, has just a 4.38 percent share of the web browser market.

But despite having such a huge lead over the competition, Google isn’t resting on its laurels.

The search engine giant has just pushed out an update for Google Chrome which could make web browsing faster than ever before.

Chrome version 68 was rolled out recently and brings with it a number of improvements to the browser.

And one of the update’s most eye-catching features was revealed by a programmer working on Chrome.

The new feature, revealed by Philip Walton, is called Page Lifecycle API.

But while it doesn’t have the catchiest of names, the update could bring a big performance improvement to Chrome users.

The new feature helps with RAM usage, suspending web pages which Chrome is not using so the browser doesn’t take up memory unnecessarily.

On Twitter, the Google engineer posted: “I just published a massive article on the new Page Lifecycle API, which allows browsers to better manage resources if you have a zillion tabs open!

“It's full advice + best practices that's the result of months of research & cross-browser testing”.

Google Chrome extensions explained

In a post online, Walton added: “Modern browsers today will sometimes suspend pages or discard them entirely when system resources are constrained.

“In the future, browsers want to do this proactively, so they consume less power and memory.

“The Page Lifecycle API, shipping in Chrome 68, provides lifecycle hooks so your pages can safely handle these browser interventions without affecting the user experience.”

The catch, however, is that web developers have to enable this as well on their end for Google Chrome to help free up RAM resources.

In other Chrome news, Express.co.uk recently reported on how the browser has been given a hidden new redesign.

However, it is only available to users that navigate through some simple tricks.

Google has been busy at work on the huge new look for Chrome and now iPhone users can get their hands on an early version.

Chrome has now moved the tab button to the bottom of the screen in addition to the forward and back buttons on the iOS app.

A search feature also sits in the middle of the two for quick Google queries.

While the top of the screen stays mostly clear when browsing and is only disrupted to bring down the URL bar.

And Incognito mode is easily accessed from the top of the tab page while a large blue button exists at the bottom to open a new web page.

Apple users need to head to a special URL to access the redesign.

These and many other insights are from Dresner Advisory Services’ 2017 Edition IoT Intelligence Wisdom of Crowds Series study. The study defines IoT as the network of physical objects, or "things," embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and connectivity to enable objects to collect and exchange data. The study examines key related technologies such as location intelligence, end-user data preparation, cloud computing, advanced and predictive analytics, and big data analytics. Please see page 11 of the study for details regarding the methodology. For an excellent overview of Internet of Things (IoT) predictions for 2018, please see Gil Press' post, 10 Predictions For The Internet Of Things (IoT) In 2018.

"Although still early days for IoT, we see this as a defining topic for the industry. IoT Intelligence, the means to understand and leverage IoT data, will likewise grow in importance and will elevate key technologies such as location intelligence, advanced and predictive analytics, and big data," said Howard Dresner, founder and chief research officer at Dresner Advisory Services.

 Related...

Key takeaways from the study include the following:

  • Business Intelligence Competency Centers (BICC), R&D, Marketing & Sales and Strategic Planning are most likely to see the importance of IoT.Finance is considered among the least likely departments to see the importance of IoT. The study also found that sales analytics apps are increasingly relying on IoT technologies as foundational components of their core application platforms.
Dresner Advisory Services’ 2017 Edition IoT Intelligence Wisdom of Crowds Series Study
  • Manufacturing, Consulting, Business Services and Distribution/Logistics are IoT industry adoption leaders. Conversely, Federal Government, State & Local Government are least likely to prioritize IoT initiatives as very important or critical. IoT early adopters are most often defining goals with clear revenue and competitive advantages to drive initiatives. Manufacturing, Consulting, Business Services and Distribution/Logistics are challenging, competitive industries where revenue growth is often tough to achieve. IoT initiatives that deliver revenue and competitive strength quickly are the most likely to get funding and support.
Dresner Advisory Services’ 2017 Edition IoT Intelligence Wisdom of Crowds Series Study
  • IoT advocates or early adopters say location intelligence, streaming data analysis, and cognitive BI to deliver the greatest business benefit.Conversely, IoT early adopters aren’t expecting to see as significant of benefits from data warehousing as they are from other technologies. Consistent with previous studies, both the broader respondent base and IoT early adopters place a high priority on reporting and dashboards. IoT early adopters also see the greater importance of visualization and end-user self-service.

Dresner Advisory Services’ 2017 Edition IoT Intelligence Wisdom of Crowds Series Study
  • Business Intelligence Competency Centers (BICC), Manufacturing and Supply Chain are among the most powerful catalysts of BI and IoT adoption in the enterprise. The greater the level of BI adoption across the 12 functional drivers of BI adoption defined in the graphic below, the greater the potential for IoT to deliver differentiated value based on unique needs by area. Marketing, Sales and Strategic Planning are also strong driver areas among IoT advocates or early adopters.
Dresner Advisory Services’ 2017 Edition IoT Intelligence Wisdom of Crowds Series Study
  • IoT early adopters are relying on growing revenue and increasing competitive advantage as the two main goals to drive IoT initiatives’ success. The most successful IoT advocates or early adopters evangelize the many benefits of IoT initiatives from a revenue growth position first. IoT early adopters are more likely to see and promote the value of better decision-making, improved operational efficiencies, increased competitive advantage, growth in revenues, and enhanced customer service when BI adoption excels, setting the foundation for IoT initiatives to succeed.

Dresner Advisory Services’ 2017 Edition IoT Intelligence Wisdom of Crowds Series Study
  • The most popular feature requirements for advanced and predictive analytics applications include regression models, textbook statistical functions, and hierarchical clustering. More than 90% of respondents replied that these three leading features are “somewhat important” to their daily use of analytics. Geospatial analysis (highly associated with mapping, populations, demographics, and other Web-generated data), recommendation engines, Bayesian methods, and automatic feature selection is the next most required series of features.
Dresner Advisory Services’ 2017 Edition IoT Intelligence Wisdom of Crowds Series Study
  • 74% of IoT advocates or early adopters say location intelligence is critical or very important. Conversely, only 26% of the overall sample ranks location intelligence at the same level of importance. One of the most promising use cases for IoT-based location intelligence is its potential to streamline traceability and supply chain compliance workflows in highly regulated manufacturing industries. In 2018, expect to see ERP and Supply Chain Management (SCM) software vendors launch new applications that capitalize on IoT location intelligence to streamline traceability and supply chain compliance on a global scale.

“Search is not just about answering your questions -- it’s also about discovery,” writes Google product manager Michael Galvez.

Google has announced three new search updates around featured snippets, knowledge panel information and suggestions for related topics.

According to a post on Google’s The Keyword blog, a selection of featured snippets will now include more images and related search suggestions within the box displaying the featured snippet content.

It is also expanding the information displayed in the Knowledge Panel to include related content.

“For example, while looking at the Knowledge Panel about skiing, you’ll see related searches for sports such as snowboarding directly inside the result,” writes Google product manager, Michael Galvez.

Google says the expansion of related topics has not only been updated within knowledge panel information, but at the top of search results as well.

Using an example of searches for the famed soccer players Neymar and Messi, Google says searchers will see suggestions for related topics, “… to discover other athletes during your search session.”

In addition to these confirmed updates, it appears Google is also testing a new feature that displays a carousel with a list of answers directly within the search results snippet, as we reported earlier today.

“Search is not just about answering your questions — it’s also about discovery,” writes Galvez, who goes on to say the updates are meant to help searches further explore the topics they are researching.

Even former Google search executive Matt Cutts calls this new Google search behavior 'super annoying.' This story was updated to say this was a bug and Google is fixing it.

Google has changed the default behavior of the search box on the Google.com home page. Now, when you go to Google’s home page, the search box will automatically expand to show you your most recent searches.

Seeing these recent searches automatically expand below the search box, before you even click into the search box to enter your search query, feels awkward. It almost feels like this is a bug.

Matt Cutts, former Google search executive, said on Google+ he finds the experience “super annoying” and wants a way to opt out of this but cannot find the opt-out. Here is a screen shot from Matt Cutts:

We have emailed Google for more details, but we have not heard back at this writing. We do hope this is a bug and Google will revert this behavior shortly. Stay tuned.

Postscript: Google has confirmed with Search Engine Land that this is not the behavior they want and it was likely a bug. “We launched the ability to see past searches by clicking the searchbox earlier this year. However, past searches should not be appearing immediately on page load, so we are working to fix this issue,” a Google spokesperson told Search Engine Land.

A new website and series of videos highlight several reasons to give up your Android phone and switch to iPhone.

Apple and Android may forever be locked in a fight for mobile domination, but they take very different approaches to their quest for market share. On the one hand, there are more than 2 billion active Android devices in use around the world. On the other, Apple makes gobs of money from selling just a handful of handsets.

But like the PC wars of the 90s, Apple isn’t content with such a slim slice of the market. While it has had a Move to iOS app in the Play Store for a while now, Apple is now taking the fight directly to Android users with a new campaign devoted to switching.

Head over to the iPhone tab on Apple.com and you’ll see a new box in the middle of the page. Called “Why Switch,” it declares that “Life is easier on the iPhone,” and offers 10 questions potential switchers might be asking:

  1. Will it be easy to switch?
  2. Is the camera as good as they say?
  3. Why is the iPhone so fast?
  4. Will iPhone be easy to use?
  5. How does iPhone help protect my personal information?
  6. What makes Messages so great?
  7. Can I get help from a real person?
  8. Can I switch at an Apple Store?
  9. What about the environment?
  10. Will I love my iPhone?

And finally, it asks, “Are you ready to switch?” while offering links to purchase all five of the phone models. The site also promotes Apple’s trade-in policy, boasting up to $260 in credits.

There is also a series of videos on Apple’s YouTube channel to highlight many of the points, including speed, ease of switching, and privacy. It’s unclear whether Apple plans on taking the campaign beyond the web, but it’s not too hard to see a TV or print campaign accompanying the site.

Earlier this year, Google unveiled its own switching site, coinciding with a new transfer tool that synced your contacts, calendar entries, and photos through Google Drive. It’s similar in practice to Apple’s Move to iOS app, but doesn’t require the installation of app you won’t need after the transfer is finished.

Apple ran a highly successful switcher campaign in the early 2000s, which used real people to tell stories about why they moved to a Mac. While Tim Cook has said upwards of 30 percent of new iPhone buyers are making the switch from an Android phone, Apple hasn’t previously launched an ad campaign targeted at Android.

Flip the switch: It’s no secret that Apple is looking for signs of growth. While the upcoming iPhone 8 will surely boost sales in the holiday quarter, Apple still needs to generate excitement during the rest of the year, which has proven difficult due to a steady stream of rumors and flagship competitors from the likes of LG and Samsung. But a new switcher campaign could be just what the doctor ordered.

Apple has issued an emergency patch to fix a vulnerability that left iOS devices at risk of being attacked via WiFi.

Just days after the release of iOS 10.3, Apple has pushed out an update for iOS 10.3.1 in order to fix a significant security issue that made iOS devices vulnerable to attacks sent via Wi-Fi.

The emergency patch addresses a vulnerability that would allow an attacker within range of an at-risk device to exploit a flaw in the operating system that would allow for arbitrary code execution that could attack the Wi-Fi chip in the device.

The issue appears to be the residual effect of a similar vulnerability that was supposedly patched with iOS 10.3. That version of the exploit allowed an attacker to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges, meaning it could affect the entire operating system.

The vulnerability patched by the update to iOS 10.3.1 affected devices with a Wi-Fi chip. That includes the iPhone 5 and later, iPad 4th generation and later and iPod touch 6th generation and later.

In a support documentation for the update, Apple credited Google Project Zero —Google’s team of security researchers—for spotting the issue.

The patch to iOS 10.3.1 also fixes an apparent issue that kept old iOS devices from downloading iOS 10.3 as an over-the-air update. 32-bit devices including the iPhone 5, 5C and fourth-generation iPad were affected, but will now be able to download the update normally.

How To Update To iOS 10.3.1

iOS 10.3.1 can be downloaded directly to your iOS device if you are connected to a Wi-Fi connection. This can be done by going to the Settings app, tapping “General” and tapping “Software Update.” An option to download and install should appear.

However, given the primary issue iOS 10.3.1 fixes has to do with potential security threats for iOS devices connected to Wi-Fi, you may choose to install the update via iTunes. Make sure your iTunes is up to date, then connect your iOS device to your computer via USB.

In iTunes, select your device’s icon from the upper left bar. Click on the Summary tab and click “check for update.” Click “Download” and iTunes will begin downloading the update. A guide of on-screen prompts will lead you through the process to complete the update.

Did your rankings in Google get better or worse over the past week? Many webmasters and SEOs are noticing some significant changes in Google's search rankings algorithm.

Last Tuesday, Feb. 7, there seems to have been a Google algorithm change that adjusted how many sites rank — both for good and bad. I’ve been tracking the update since Feb. 8, and over time, more and more webmasters and SEOs have been taking notice of the ranking changes at Google.

This seems to be unrelated to the unconfirmed link algorithm change from earlier in February. This new update seems to be more related to Panda, based on such things as content and site quality, versus link factors.

Google has not confirmed the update and would not comment on what webmasters and SEOs have been noticing over the past week in the search results. So we cannot confirm if this was a content quality shift, link quality change or something else. But what we can say is that webmasters and SEOs are very busy noticing these ranking changes, through looking at ranking reports or their traffic from Google in their analytics, or using tracking tools that track visibility and other means.

The automated tracking tools from Mozcast, RankRanger, Accuranker and others also all showed evidence of an algorithm update on Feb. 7.

This update seems to have been somewhat significant, which is why we reached out to Google for a comment. If we hear more from Google, we will update you. But for now, this is all based on the conversation and chatter that I track closely within the industry.

Those innocent-looking apps in your smartphone can secretly spy on your communications or could allow hackers to do so.

Hard to believe, but it's true.

Recently, Trustwave's SpiderLabs analysts discovered a hidden backdoor in Skype for Apple's macOS and Mac OS X operating systems that could be used to spy on users' communications without their knowledge.

The backdoor actually resides in the desktop Application Programming Interface (API) that allows third-party plugins and apps to communicate with Microsoft-owned Skype — the popular video chat and messaging service.

Appeared to have been around since at least 2010, the backdoor could allow any malicious third-party app to bypass authentication procedure and provide nearly complete access to Skype on Mac OS X.

How an Attacker can Take Complete Control of Your Skype

attacker

The malicious app could bypass authentication process if they "identified themselves as the program responsible for interfacing with the Desktop API on behalf of the Skype Dashboard widget program."

Accessing this backdoor is incredibly easy. All hackers need to do is change a text string in apps to this value → "Skype Dashbd Wdgt Plugin," and the desktop API would provide access to sensitive features of Skype.

An attacker or any malicious program abusing this hidden backdoor could perform the following actions:

  • Read notifications of incoming messages (and their contents)
  • Intercept, read and modify messages
  • Log and record Skype call audio
  • Create chat sessions
  • Retrieve user contact information

The researchers have also provided proof-of-concept Objective-C code that initiates the connection process without asking the user for permission for the process to attach to Skype:

The backdoor believes to have been created by a developer at Skype before Microsoft acquired the company and likely exposed more than 30 Million Mac OS X users.

Update Your Skype Installation Now!

Trustwave notified Microsoft of the vulnerability in October, and the company has patched the issue in Skype 7.37 and later versions.

Here's what a Microsoft spokesperson said about the backdoor:

"We do not build backdoors into our products, but we do continuously improve the product experience [and] product security and encourage customers to always upgrade to the latest version."

Trustwave also speculated that the backdoor believed to have been accidently left in Skype "during the process of implementing the dashboard plugin," as the Skype dashboard widget does not appear to utilize it.

All versions of Skype for Mac OS and Mac OS X, including 7.35 version, are vulnerable. So users are strongly recommended to update their Skype installation as soon as possible.
