Gaming on our Android phones and tablets has become more popular than ever. And powerful hardware and beautiful displays have only added to the charm of gaming on the platform.

From the first 2D games released in the early 2000s to the VR games of 2017, games on the Android platform have come a long way from their humble beginning in 2007. The Google PlayStore today acts as a repository that hosts tens of thousands of games.

However, this large selection of games can often end up becoming a pain for many users who find it extremely difficult to sift through and find the perfect game for the day.

So, here are our top picks for 2017.

Injustice 2

The sequel to the highly acclaimed game, Injustice: Gods Amongst Us, brings more of the same in its latest offering. Injustice 2, a game crafted from the mould of the popular Mortal Combat games was released along with its beefier console and PC versions on May 17.

The game is a must-have for all DC Comics faithfuls who’ve grown up with the various heroes and villains of the Comic book giant's lineup. Its superior graphics, in-game mechanics backed by a gripping backstory that piggybacks to the various DC characters found in the game, make it one of the best games available on the Android platform currently.

Injustice 2 comes with 28 characters, with every fighter bringing to the game unique playstyle, abilities, moves, and super moves, and comes recommended for gamers looking for a fighting game to keep them busy for days to come.

Lumino City

The much-awaited game which was first released on iOS, and finally made its way to the Android platform in May 2017, puts you in the shoes of young protagonist Lumi who must rescue her grandfather after he was forcibly abducted from his home while she was busy making tea downstairs. Lumi uses clues left behind by her grandfather in this puzzle adventure.

The plot of the game is dark, with many twists and turns, however, it's not anywhere close to being the main draw of this game.

Lumino City's beautiful world is not the result of brilliant CGI work, but instead a product of innovative thinking by its British developers – State of Play – who constructed an entire miniature mountain-top city made out of cardboard for the game.

The game is truly original in its approach and builds a captivating world that users can immerse themselves in. It has won several awards and as such comes highly recommended.

Super Mario Run

For decades, Mario has remained shy of crossing over from the Nintendo ecosystem, and games featuring the Italian plumber hero have only been found on dedicated Nintendo gaming systems. However, with the growing popularity of Mario games, and subsequent calls for titles on other mobile devices, Nintendo earlier in April finally released a game tailored specifically for the mobile platforms.

The much-awaited Super Mario Run from the franchise has been received well by users and critics alike. Game review websites such as IGN and pocket lint have given it above 80 per cent score, making it highly recommended.

The game's objective is simple, and so are its mechanics, which see players control the Italian plumber with just one hand as he runs forward into hurdles and enemies in his path. Users can make Mario jump by tapping on the screen, allowing him to avoid obstacles and enemies, and collect coins along the way.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Episode 1

Another interesting addition to the list is the "Guardians of the Galaxy" from Telltale Games. The game features a unique story which deviates slightly from Marvel's cinematic universe. Telltale Games is releasing it in the form of episodes – much like the latest Hitman game.

The game uses Telltale's story-driven narrative style and has received favourable reviews for its engaging plot and immersive graphics. However, the first episode is a bit short, and the game leaves you craving for more.

Tomb Raider

Not necessarily a new title, this Tomb Raider game is a port of the one released on PC and consoles years ago. A full port of the original Tomb Raider reboot, it comes with the complete story and missions. The game sees Lara Croft exploring the in-game world and fighting off enemies as she embarks on a journey to uncover mysteries.

But there's a catch. The game is only available for NVIDIA Shield Android TV users, and if you're not one of them, then there's no news on when your wait will end.

Well then, happy gaming!

I must admit the main reason for me to purchase my first Android phone was to use things for free. When you have a good phone in hand, you can get a plenty of useful things for no price: you can download life log apps, calculators, dictionaries and even more. And, of course, games, which can be very handy sometimes.

In this article I would like to show you how to download games for free on your device. It is dead easy, of course, but there are a plenty of good tricks to know.

Get an app store

An app store Android app is simply an internet store where you can download an purchase applications from the Internet. This makes it very easy to find free stuff very quickly. If you do not have an app store on your gadget, you can easily download one from the Internet. I would recommend Google Play, which is installed on most of the Android devices in circulation in US and Europe. This is the most popular and most used application you can have, but I can imagine cases when it does not work.

In some very very complicated cases Google Play is not an option. There are some clumsily rooted devices which might not be able to run this application anymore, so you will have to look for alternatives.

The installation shall be quick and easy. The only problem which may occur is that your device might be set not to run application from “foreign” or “insecure” Android apps, or application from “unknown sources”. If it is so, a wizard will certainly guide you through the way of changing these settings, and the program will run without any problems.

Note: If your phone does not have Google Play you are not able to change your settings or download any app stores, check your device carefully. It might have already been mounted, is an anciently old one, or even a cheap, faked device.

Search for free games

With having an app store, it should be super easy to download free games to your Android device. Most app stores have a good search engine with the help of which you can search and filter apps. Your only task is to select free applications and click on the download button.

Good to know

You can often download applications directly from the webpages of their creators (.apk files). However, it is highly recommended to use and app store for finding the applications which suit you. App stores, especially the big ones, like Google Play select their palette of programs very carefully. If you use them, you can avoid viruses, compatibility issues, or products which do not fulfill the minimum criteria of a good app. Besides, you often can read reviews, customer opinions and other useful information about the software.

Keep in mind

Free applications are usually free because their finances are based in alternative sources, such as advertisement. If you download a free app, be aware that your game might be interrupted by pop-ups. It is a good idea to use these apps in an offline mode, if possible. Otherwise, advertisements might cause you high cost due to intense web traffic.

Free applications are, very often, basic of demo versions of the “mother” application, which especially in the case of games might be very annoying. You might not be able to finish your game or try out different features. Keep this in mind when you plan to surprise your kid with a free game. It might be extremely disappointing to have something he or she cannot finish.

Before you download a free game, please make sure that it is really free. Some of the free applications are basic versions of the full one. They contain several in-app purchases, with the help of which you can download pro and extra features. Before you give the phone to a small kid, please make sure that you disabled all playing methods and the child cannot purchase something by accident.  The best solution is to put your device offline if it is possible.

All in all, downloading free games to an Android device is not a big deal, but there are certain things on which you shall pay attention. The best way to avoid disturbances is to use games in an offline mode, or try on a device without a SIM card, in order to avoid accidental purchases. With the help of an app store, such as Google Play, you can certainly avoid most of the dangers, like viruses or malware, plus, you get a selection of good options to download.

Amazon is gearing up for the Christmas season by allowing customers to get instant vouchers for trading their unwanted possessions.

The U.S. retail giant has long-offered a trade-in option in exchange for gift card credit, but now — with Christmas just 40 days away — its new ‘Instant Payment’ service lets you get your money right away… before you’ve even sent the item over. That down for its previous policy of 10 days.

There’s a small catch, the instant payment service is initially live for video games and related accessories only. But it is very easy to use.

Simply submit details of the item/items that you wish to return, after which gift card credit is immediately dispatched. You then have seven days to mail the item to Amazon, via a UPS location, using a printable, prepaid shipping label that is provided on the Amazon website.

Amazon stressed that trade-in values vary based on the condition of the item in question, but some rough prices for popular gaming products are as follows:

  • Nintendo Wii U Console: up to $150
  • Sony PlayStation 4 500GB Console: up to $170
  • Microsoft Xbox One 500GB: up to $115
  • FIFA 17: up to $25
  • Paper Mario Color Splash: up to $30
  • Gears of War 4: up to $26

The initiative will welcomed by many customers as the costly present-buying season approaches, but don’t bank on being able to spend your trade-in cash on the hottest thing in gaming now: an NES Classic. The much-sought-after Nintendo console is, well, much sought after… with its first batch selling out on Amazon last week in a matter of seconds. Luckily Amazon has plenty of other items on display.

More details on Amazon Instant Payment are here.
