Over the past couple of years, Google and Yahoo have played a pivotal role in the digital world. Not only are they the top, most used search engines with the highest market penetration, they also play a major role in the computer software industry.

Even though Google has created a strong brand name, Yahoo is not far behind. In fact, in certain aspects, Yahoo outweighs Google. The rivalry of these two search engines has continued to evolve at a rapid pace.

Users always prefer one search engine over the other, but what actually makes the said engine better or worse is often not understood and considered by them. Here are some ways how you can compare the performance and value of these two search engines.

The most valuable thing a search engine can offer is generating the most relevant search results for their users. Not to generalize, but users all over the world prefer a search engine which is able to deliver the most fulfilling and satisfying results for their search queries. While it is slightly difficult to measure relevancy as it depends upon user to user experience, an experiment showed that Yahoo generates more relevant results with a slightly higher relevancy degree of 4.8 compared to Google’s 4.6. On the other hand Google provides much more concise results. It offers a preview of information on the right column of the search engine result page which users find extremely beneficial.

Google algorithm is known to be much better than of any other search engine. This is because it favors quality content over well-established links and pages unlike Yahoo which still prefers old and well established websites. Not only is Google good for users as it provides them with reliable and relevant results, it is also preferred by new bloggers and site owners because it gives them opportunity to build valuable links.

The ease of access and usage is another factor to determine which search engine is the best. Google provides the feature Google Instant which allows for much quicker and faster results without the user having to press enter. However, while Google offers its users such quick results, Yahoo’s homepage holds more attraction for its users. With a wide array of interactive features like news, sports, finance, weather and much more on their page; some users find it easy to access their required information and connect with the world.

Both Google and Yahoo offer different benefits. They both have different ranking systems and algorithms. However, this does not mean that one is better than the other. While most of the young people do prefer Google today, people who are older than 45 still seem to stick to Yahoo. You need to make a choice based on whichever search engine serves your purpose and goals the best.

However, when it comes to SEO, it is important that you concentrate on all search engines and not just one.

We’re using email for e-comm and couponing more than ever—and Yahoo’s experimental CardMail client aims to make better sense of the daily deluge.

How we use email has changed a lot since the ’90s, but the way we receive it hasn’t changed much at all. Sure, our mailboxes are bigger, and the messages look a little fancier, but by and large email’s still just an ever-growing list of messages, trailing off toward infinity in reverse chronological order.

But if an experimental mail program design from Yahoo takes off, the inbox itself could become a thing of the past. At the Association for Computing Machinery‘s recent conference on human-computer interaction, the Sunnyvale, Calif. tech giant unveiled a prototype design called CardMail that replaces the venerable inbox view with a set of lists in categories like travel, deals, events, and receipts.

Within each category, CardMail messages are sorted in an order that makes sense rather than simply the order they came in. Airlines could be sorted by flight times, for instance, and information about an event or deal is displayed in a newsfeed-style post, rather than simply showing the first few words from the message.

“The way I think about it is, if someone had come to you with a design problem today, and said we’re building this system that’s going to manage all your receipts, all your deals, all your tickets to events, all your travel information, would you design a system that’s a reverse chronological list of senders and subject?” asks Frank Bentley, a senior principal researcher at Yahoo. “Probably not.”

At the conference, Bentley and a team of researchers presented results of a personal email use study that led them to test ideas for new kinds of interfaces designed for how email is used today.

When the researchers asked survey participants–who included Yahoo users along with those loyal to rival mail products from companies like Google and Microsoft–to check when they had last sent an email from a personal account, the median participant hadn’t sent one in two days–and 25% of those surveyed hadn’t sent an email in 10 days or more. It’s not that people aren’t talking to each other online, of course, it’s just that social media has taken over. People are more likely to send quick messages to friends and family through texting apps like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, share photos through Instagram or Snapchat, or share broad life updates on their Facebook feeds.

And it’s not that the people surveyed weren’t active email users–many of them still checked their email multiple times a day, looking for the latest deals and other updates from companies they did business with, even without sending out personal letters.

“One of the main findings in the paper is sort of this redefinition of what email overload is,” says Bentley. “Back in the ’90s, people were talking about email overload in terms of having too much email to respond to.”

Now, at least when it comes to personal accounts, they’re more likely to be referring to a deluge of coupons, purchase confirmations, and other business correspondence that makes it difficult to find messages they’re looking for. Even with good text search tools in modern email clients, plane tickets can still get lost in a sea of coupons and frequent-flyer program updates from the same airline, Bentley says.

“They’re really trying to get through all of the commercial mail they receive–and they love,” says Bentley.

And users take advantage of the messages they’re getting–46% of survey respondents telling Yahoo they had used a coupon or deal from an email within the past week. And they weren’t reluctant to unsubscribe from lists they were no longer interested in–20% of respondents in one survey had done so in the previous week. Still, the sheer volume of commercial messages had led many participants to abandon old accounts to start over anew, and many had given up any attempt at organizing their inboxes or even opening every message.

“People are treating their email much more like a Facebook feed,” Bentley says, scrolling through, clicking on interesting messages and simply ignoring others.

That led Bentley and his coauthors to put together the CardMail design, which Yahoo is still tinkering with–there is no timeline for a public release.

Attempts to declutter our inboxes are not new: Yahoo already offers what it calls Smart Views, letting users filter their emails into categories like travel and shopping, and rivals like Google offer similar groupings. And email services from Google and Microsoft can automatically pull event and ticket information from email messages into their calendar apps. The CardMail concept goes further, doing away with the traditional inbox view altogether.

“We have done some studies where we’ve had people log in and use (CardMail) with their own emails,” he says. “People like that it’s surfacing what’s relevant to them right now.”

22-year-old Hamilton resident's social media profiles paint different picture than FBI's

The FBI alleges that 22-year-old Karim Baratov, from Ancaster, Ont., was one of four men connected with a series of cyberattacks carried out on Yahoo that began in early 2014.But you wouldn't know it from Baratov's online persona.

On Instagram, Baratov presents himself as a high-end car enthusiast. He has frequently posted pictures of Aston Martins, Audis, Mercedes and BMWs, among other cars that he claimed to own; gaining nearly 30,000 followers in the process.

In one post, he describes himself as "well off in high school to be able to afford driving a BMW 7 series and pay off a mortgage on my first house.

"In others, he's shown spreading handfuls of $100 bills.

Baratov, who has dual Canadian-Kazakh citizenship, goes by at least two other names according to the FBI. He does not list his profession, nor how he became so well off at such a young age, on social media.

His Instagram profile describes him only as a: "Workaholic. Occasional drawer. Gym rat.

"But a cached search reveals another description: "Self made entrepreneur/programmer/web developer/investor.

"Clues left on Baratov's various social media profiles and websites registered under his name — coupled with allegations of computer hacking and economic espionage made by the FBI — offer a glimpse into how Baratov may have made his living.

He claimed in postings on the social media site Ask.fm that he made his "first million" when he was 15, working on "online services."

 "I prefer online businesses because there is way less risk and less effort in a way," he wrote.

A call to the number tied with Baratov's home address was not answered.

Baratov made a brief appearance in a Hamilton courthouse on Wednesday morning and was returned to custody.

Old websites leave clues

Neighbours on Chambers Avenue where Baratov lives said Wednesday they often puzzled at the young man's lifestyle – to be able to afford to live alone in a large, new house in an expensive subdivision, and to always be seen driving pricey cars.

"His parents either bought him the house, or he's getting money somewhere else, because he doesn't seem to work all day; he just drives up and down the street," said Kerry Carter, a neighbour who lives a few doors down.

Baratov's Facebook page links to a website called Elite Space, written in Russian, which claims to offer a number of services, including servers for rent in Russia, protection from distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, and domain names in China.

Though it does not specifically mention hacking, there are clues on other sites that this may also have been among his services.

For example, an email address matching one of Baratov's aliases was used to register an account with a Russian discussion forum, which lists DDoS and hacking as the Canadian user's interests. The profile then links to a website that claims to offer email hacking services for a handful of Russian email services, including Mail.ru, as well as Gmail.

There are also a number of websites registered in Baratov's name, including one called "mail-google.us," and another "mail-yandex.us." Though the websites are no longer online, the URLs appear designed to trick visitors into thinking they are visiting a legitimate Google or Yandex email site — a common phishing tactic.

While it is difficult to definitively link the sites to Baratov, they appear to fit the FBI's description of his alleged illicit work.

According to the agency's indictment, Baratov's job was to use the information gleaned from the Yahoo intrusion to gain access to targets' email accounts with other service providers.

​Baratov's last Instagram post was a photo from the 70Down restaurant and lounge in Toronto's Yorkville neighbourhood, the night before his arrest.

A dark web vendor is reportedly selling millions of decrypted Gmail and Yahoo accounts in an unspecified underground marketplace. Over 20 million Gmail accounts and five million Yahoo accounts from previous massive data breaches are now reportedly up for sale.

A dark web vendor going by the name "SunTzu583", who has previously also allegedly listed over one million decrypted Gmail and Yahoo accounts on the dark web, now appears to have ramped up his efforts.

According to a HackRead report, in separate listings, the cybercriminal is allegedly offering 4,928,888 and 21,800,969 Gmail accounts, of which the latter has been listed for $450 (0.4673 Bitcoins). While the first listing includes email addresses and clear text passwords, 75% of the second listing allegedly contains decrypted passwords and 25% hashed passwords.

The Gmail data reportedly corresponds to those stolen in previous breaches, including the Nulled.cr hack and the Dropbox data breach.

The cybercriminal is also allegedly selling 5,741,802 Yahoo accounts for $250 (0.2532 Bitcoins). Most of the accounts listed were allegedly disabled and appear to have been stolen from MySpace, Adobe and LinkedIn data breaches.

For both the Gmail and Yahoo accounts, the dark web vendor claims that not all the email and password combinations work directly, warning potential buyers to not expect them to match in all cases.

The data has reportedly been matched against those on popular data breach notification platforms such as Have I Been Pwned and Hacked-DB. However, the data has not been independently verified by IBTimes UK.

Cybercrime ramped up to alarming levels last year, which also saw a slew of massive cyberattacks. Those concerned about keeping their accounts and data safe should incorporate safe security practices. In the event of a breach, or even a potential one, it is recommended that passwords be changed immediately. Interestingly, the platform also saw the different and varied uses AMP can be put to. The framework when launched was aimed mainly towards content with the intent of making websites and articles faster. Why was this important? Now comes another negative news from the company about the third hack that has occurred.

Yahoo is warning some of its customers that state sponsored attackers have been logging into their accounts using a system of forgery of cookies, a system that does not require the acquisition of passwords.

The company has informed Zdnet via email that outside experts have been investigating the creation of forged cookies that could allow an attacker to access user accounts without a password, something that was used during 2015 or 2016 to access multiple accounts. From Twitter other users have confirmed the receipt of similar emails warning about the invasion.

Yahoo as we know it is no longer. Not only has CEO Marissa Mayer resigned, but TechCrunch reports the remaining board members have chosen to rename the company as Altaba Inc.

filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission confirms the name change, which TechCrunch states is a sign that the company’s sale to Verizon is moving forward as planned.

Verizon is set to acquire the majority of Yahoo’s assets following the sale, while Altaba Inc. will retain a 15% stake in Alibaba and a 35.5% stake in Yahoo Japan.

That means Yahoo’s search engine, blogs, email service, and other properties contained on the homepage will continue to operate under Verizon. They’re not going anywhere for the time being. Altaba is essentially picking up what’s left behind after the Verizon sale.

The Altaba board now consists of only 5 members: Tor Braham, Eric Brandt, Catherine Friedman, Thomas McInerney and Jeffrey Smith. Altaba is now just a holding company, which owns nothing more than stock and patents. 

The Yahoo brand we’ve always known could very well continue to live on under Verizon. Former CEO Marissa Mayer may end up in a role with Verizon as well, but her future plans have yet to be announced.

Those who use Yahoo’s web services are not likely to notice any change if and when the sale to Verizon closes. There’s still a chance the deal won’t even go through, in which case all of the above can be disregarded. Yahoo recently disclosed details of two significant hacks, which analysts speculate could put the deal with Verizon in jeopardy.

This is all the information that is available at this time. More details are expected to be revealed later this month during Yahoo’s earnings call.

Although, Yahoo may cite security concerns at the root of the issue - and it may be true to some extent, given the hacking involving over a billion accounts in 2013 – the possibility of making attempts to force customers to its mail page in order to appease its dwindling crowd of advertisers cannot to ruled out.

Yahoo, the search engine that once was almost synonymous with the internet, has been on a downward spiral for years with frequent arrivals and departures of CEOs, who failed to turn things around. Against this backdrop, the arrival of the present CEO, Marissa Mayer, in 2012 was hailed as that of a Messiah.

At that time, not only did media become obsessed with her impressive CV, but also the photogenic look of the blonde too, while occasionally making reference to her toned physique, when they had nothing else left to write about.

Unfortunately, judging by her performance, she has been a square peg in the round hole: bloated acquisitions, missing out on social media – remember Yahoo Messenger – e-commerce and of course, the stampede of talented executives to get out, finally took its toll on the company on her watch, which ultimately saw the end of Yahoo functioning as an independent company, when Verizon decided to take over Yahoo’s core business last year.

By the time Ms Mayer call it a day to experimenting, over $2billion of Yahoo capital had been spent, despite the brand name slowly approaching the precipice of irrelevance. Growing dissent among the shareholders, meanwhile, may have forced Ms Mayer to face the inevitable – selling its core internet business to Verizon.

Ms Mayer, a former Google vice president, landed at Yahoo with great fanfare in 2012. Tech analysts thought that she came with a silver bullet, based on her experience and technical knowledge while serving at Google. Unfortunately, she soon proved that she was no better than the army of Chief Executives who came and left in quick succession at the helm of the company. In short, Ms Mayer couldn’t grasp the enormity of the challenge before her.

Yahoo, now a mere shadow of its former self, underestimated the meteoric rise of Google in its early days on search front. Adding insult to injury, the top executives neither managed to come up with a search algorithm on their own to beat Google at its own game nor saw an avenue to shine in a different path.

When things were going from bad to worse, Yahoo started spreading in too many directions in the name of diversification in the hope of searching for luck – a failed strategy mocked as peanut butter manifesto by the seasoned analysts. That seemed to be the final nail of the coffin as far as Yahoo as an independent company was concerned.

When we look back on what happened at Yahoo on Ms Mayer’s watch, it is clear that she didn’t have a vision to turn the company around. Nor did she feel the need of one closer to her for the sake of the survival of the company. Alarmingly, she is not the only CEO with this essential ingredient missing in the technical world.

Fortunately, there are still visionary CEOs in the world, although they are few and far between, for the CEOs in Ms Mayer’s enviable position to look up to: Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Elon Musk of Tesla and Brian Chesky of Airbnb and the likes are still delivering a yeomen service to mankind while playing their corresponding roles in extending the technological progress at impressive speed.

Despite the availability of plenty of mail alternatives to Yahoo, the mail users are concerned about the fate of their mail addresses, in the event of something unthinkable takes place at Yahoo.

Unfortunately, it, a free service, is not going to be one of the priorities to be taken up by Ms Mayer in the next few months. If she dealt with the issues facing billions of its mail users, before things got worse for Yahoo at the very beginning since her arrival, of course, Ms Mayer, perhaps, could have reversed the destructive trend to some extent in her quest to bring in success to the search giant.
