Test: how good are you at reading emotions in someone's eyes?

By:

What emotion is the person in the photograph feeling? Is he preoccupied? Ashamed? Scared? Maybe guilty?

They are four very different emotions but interpreting them correctly only by looking into someone's eyes can be harder than you think and it turns out that women are better at it than men.

Men and women pick up on different emotions
Women tend to be better at detecting emotions but men have the edge when it comes to picking up on emotions linked to lust and anger.

The results of a survey in which 2,000 people participated reveal that men are better at noticing lust (interest, desire) and anger (hostile) while women are better at detecting when someone is in a vulnerable position. Emotions reflecting vulnerability include shock, being scared and pleading.

Only 61 per cent of male respondents noticed when someone was scared compared to 71 per cent of women. Conversely men detected interest well: 58 per cent got it right compared to 53 per cent of women. The difference was almost as marked when respondents were asked to detect desire with 42 per cent of men correctly identifying it compared to 39 per cent of women.

People think they are better at reading emotions than they actually are
On average the participants got half of the shown emotions right. More than half of the participants identified shocked, scared and pleading. The hardest emotion to read from the eyes was sympathy with only 15 per cent of respondents answering correctly.

Take the test
The test is based on Reading of the Mind in the Eyes test created by Professor Simon Baron-Cohen at the University of Cambridge in England as part of research into autism.
