WHEN EDWARD SNOWDEN TELLS YOU NOT TO DOWNLOAD SOMETHING, LISTEN

Earlier this week, Google released a messaging service called Allo it hopes will become a competitor to similar products like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

So, what exactly is Allo?

According to whistleblower nonpareil Edward Snowden, who took to Twitter to denounce the app to his 2.4M followers, Allo is “a Google app that records every message you ever send and makes it available to police upon request.” (Digressive ed. note: The only account Snowden follows on Twitter is the NSA. That's the virtual equivalent of the gesture of pointing from your eyes to their eyes.)

The reason Snowden refers to Allo as “Google Surveillance” is because the new service stores all non-incognito (cognito?) messages by default and retains them until they’re deleted by a user.

While Google says that function will improve the service’s smart-reply feature, it also means that standard Allo messages will be accessible to legal requests from law enforcement by default. Snowden believes that function serves another purpose as well: “Thinking about Allo? Last year, our secret court approved 100% of requests for surveillance. They would cover Allo.”

If having Big Brother in your business doesn’t bother you, more power to you. But if you'd prefer to keep your private messages private, Snowden advises using Signal Messenger.
