QUESTIONNAIRE DEVELOPMENT AND ANALYSIS FOR EDUCATIONAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES RESEARCH: PART 4

Inferential statistics for questionnaire data and doing correlations, reliability analysis, and T-tests in SPSS

This module, presented by Dr Aek Phakiti (pictured) is aimed at providing an introduction to questionnaire development and analyses for educational and social sciences research. It will take place in four two-hour workshops on Thursdays and will comprise two seminars and two computer-lab sessions. Questionnaires are popular instruments for eliciting people’s psychological aspects – for example, cognitive processes, motivation, and anxiety – as well as other aspects such as beliefs, attitudes and experiences. Workshop participants will be work in groups of 4–5 people and provided with activities and tasks related to each of the aspects below. Groups may be asked to share their discussion or work with the whole class.

Speaker/ Performer:

Aek Phakiti is an associate professor in TESOL and the coordinator of postgraduate coursework at Sydney School of Education and Social Work at The University of Sydney. His research broadly focuses on second-language acquisition, language assessment and research methods. He is currently the vice president of the Association of Language Testing and Assessment for Australia and New Zealand and associate editor of Language Assessment Quarterly. Dr Phakiti is author and editor of numerous books in applied linguistics, including The  Palgrave Handbook of Applied Linguistics Research Methodology (Palgrave, forthcoming, 2018); Quantitative Methods for Second Language Research: A Problem-solving Approach (Routledge, forthcoming, 2017); Research Methods in Applied Linguistics: A Practical Resource (Bloomsbury, 2015); Experimental Research Methods in Language Learning (Bloomsbury, 2014); Teaching Academic Writing (University of Michigan Press, 2009); and Strategic Competence and EFL Reading Test Performance (Peter Lang, 2007). His research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Language Testing; Language Learning; Language Assessment Quarterly, and TESOL Quarterly.
