The volunteer's role

Cuso International in Peru is looking for a volunteer like you to conduct market research in farmers' markets to better understand market trends, opportunities and threats, examine fluctuations in supply and demand, as well as obtain information on products sold in addition to measuring customer satisfaction of urban agriculture in the capital city of Lima.

Urban and peri-urban agriculture is reemerging worldwide as a strategy to address a diverse array of interrelated urban issues, especially those related to food, health, environment and income generation. Farmers' markets have the potential to give urban farmers access to new, larger-volume markets that can increase their income and scale up production through aggregation, distribution, and marketing services.

Farmers' markets not only raise awareness about healthy eating, food security, and organic agriculture but they can educate the public about the importance of urban agriculture in creating a sustainable city. In addition, farmers' markets become a place for the neighborhood to gather and engage in cultural and recreational activities - revalorizing public spaces throughout the city!

In Lima, most farmers' markets have emerged from organized neighbors or civil society associations and experience significant barriers including bureaucratic process and reluctance from municipalities. Due to the increasing demand for organic, environmentally-friendly, healthy and short-food supply chain products, you'll notice that there are exciting opportunities to strengthen and replicate these farmers' markets throughout the city. However, in Lima, where urban and peri-urban agriculture is practiced, little in-depth data is available and few systematization efforts have been undertaken.

THIS is where your experience and skills will be crucial!

In collaboration with representatives of the Network of Organic Agriculture in Peru (RAE for its acronym in Spanish) and the local farmers' markets, as a volunteer, you will carry out research to obtain reliable information to strengthen the farmers' markets around the city and promote urban and peri-urban products. Working with your local colleagues, you will also develop data collection tools to build their capacity to collect and analyze systematic data.

As a volunteer, you will:

  • Design the market research process (e.g. defining the objective and problem, focus/scope, data collection techniques and tools, resource planning, as well as deadlines)
  • Develop standardized data collection tools
  • Build the capacity of farmers' markets to collect and analyze data in a systematic and coherent manner
  • Validate market research findings and report with partners prior to dissemination

Cuso International covers the following costs:

  1. Return airfare and visa/permit costs
  2. Accommodation while overseas
  3. Modest living allowance while overseas
  4. Modest support for accompanying partners and dependents going on placement with you for 12 months or longer
  5. The cost of required vaccinations, antimalarial medication and health insurance
  6. Access to Employee Assistance Program while overseas and upon return
  7. Travel and accommodation for reintegration debriefing weekend
  8. Travel and accommodation for the five-day pre-departure training course and in-country training orientation

Qualifications
  • Degree in Business Administration, Economics, Social Sciences, or a similar discipline.
Preferred Skills
  • 2-3 years of relevant professional experience
  • Experience conducting market research, including interviews and/or focus groups.
  • Strong writing, editing, and communications skills
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as well as ability to work under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
  • Person with creativity, sound judgement and ability to work both independently and in a team
  • High level attention to detail and evidence of a superior work ethic

**Please note this is an 8-month placement based in Peru that starts between Jan-Mar (flexible).
