We are a Sydney Medical School research group based in the Kolling Insitute at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney.

 

We are focused on disease biomarkers in blood. The analysis of body fluids, especially serum and plasma, is often undertaken as part of biomarker projects. Changes in cytokine, hormone, and protein levels in body fluids can be indicative of disease or a response to therapy. The Herbert laboratory has developed a novel approach to blood sampling for cytokine analysis that enables additional data to be obtained from a single blood draw. Using a range of preparation techniques and immunoassay techniques, our group is defining a set of robust methods for biomarker analysis in a range of blood components. 

 

Our group is working with clinical research groups to identify panels of markers that may be applied to assist in diagnosis and determining the efficacy therapies. We are working on a range of disease areas including osteoarthritis, cancer, infectious diseases and preeclampsia in pregnancy. We have access to clinical samples in a number of diseases.

 

The project is covered by a range of patent applications and commercialisation of some aspects has begun. The PhD projects will be completed in conjunction with an Australian industry partner, Sangui Bio Pty Ltd and international commercialisation partners.
